UCLA began its national title defense with 58 goals in four wins at the Michigan Invite. The No. 1 Bruins took out No. 11 Arizona State (14-5), No. 14 UC San Diego (14-5), Indiana (15-6), and Colorado State (15-2). Sunday, UCLA jumped out to a 9-0 lead vs. the Hoosiers, while junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen collected a career-high 14 saves in that game. Junior Katie Rulon totaled 12 goals in the four wins to lead the team. UCLA next competes at No. 12 Loyola Marymount Saturday (Feb. 2).

SAN JOSE STATE came out on top in all four of its Michigan Invitational games to start the season, defeating No. 14 UC San Diego (9-5), Indiana (13-8), the host No. 18 Wolverines (9-8), and Colorado State (16-5). Junior Juliet Moss poured in five goals vs. the Tritons while the Spartans notched a shutout in the second and third quarters that game. Senior goalkeeper Kendra Adama combined for 32 saves on the weekend. Two MPSF contests are coming up this week, at California Saturday (Feb. 2) and then home vs. Pacific Sunday (Feb. 3).

ARIZONA STATE won three of four games at the Michigan Invitational this past weekend, with victories against the 18th-ranked host Wolverines, 7-5, Indiana, 12-3, and No. 14 UC San Diego, 6-4. In Sunday's win over the Tritons, junior Addison McGrath nailed her third straight multiple-goal game, while the No. 11 Sun Devils registered a second quarter shutout. McGrath also knocked in her 100th career goal in the earlier win over the Hoosiers. ASU is next in action Saturday (Feb. 2) at the Cal Baptist Invite in Riverside, taking on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Cal Baptist, and Concordia.

CALIFORNIA senior Molly Hayes and sophomore Meghan Corso each tallied three goals in the season opener Sunday as the No. 5 Golden Bears won 13-6 at No. 8 UC Davis. Cal scored three straight goals to start the game and outscored UCD in every quarter to lead the entire way. Senior goalkeeper Heather Stuart recorded 12 saves, six in the third quarter. The Bears have a busy week ahead, with MPSF games at Pacific Wednesday (Jan. 30), and at home vs. San Jose State Saturday (Feb. 2). They also host a non-league doubleheader vs. Sonoma State Sunday (Feb. 3).

USC opens at home vs. '07 NCAA Tournament participant Hartwick on Saturday (Feb. 2). Forel Davies returns as an all-freshman conference selection last year. The Trojans are coming off a third place national finish with a 22-6 record.

STANFORD hosts Santa Clara Sunday (Feb. 3). Junior All-American Lauren Silver (2.13 GPG) is amongst the top returnees from last year's national runner-up team. The Cardinal went 27-3 in `07, and was unbeaten at 12-0 in the MPSF regular season.

HAWAII opens its season in Northern California Feb. 6-7, immediately jumping into MPSF action at Pacific and California. The No. 4 Warriors return junior All-American Kelly Mason from a 17-10 squad, second in the MPSF in scoring last year (2.60 GPG).

LONG BEACH STATE opens its 2008 season at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament Saturday (Feb. 2), taking on the No. 20 Roadrunners and Fresno Pacific. The 49ers are coming off an 8-19 season and returns '07 MPSF All-Freshman honoree Cecilia Canetti (24 goals) as well as senior Dayna Wawrzynski (20 goals).

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE begins its 2008 season at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament Sunday (Feb. 3), playing both the No. 20 host Roadrunners and Fresno Pacific. The Matadors finished 16-19 in 2007 and return MPSF All-Freshman goalkeeper Jilian Stapf and two-time Honorable Mention All-American senior Allison Brookes.

UC IRVINE hosts '07 NCAA Tournament participant Hartwick to begin the new season Saturday (Feb. 2). Senior goalkeeper Lauren Machanis returns from last year's 19-13 squad.

UC SANTA BARBARA partakes in the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament this weekend, where it will meet the 20th-ranked host Roadrunners Saturday (Feb. 2) as well as Fresno Pacific in the season openers. Junior Gilian Morgan returns after leading the 16-22 Gauchos with 47 goals in '07.

PACIFIC begins the '08 season at home Wednesday (Jan. 30) vs. California in an MPSF game. The Tigers are also visiting San Jose State Sunday (Feb. 3) in conference play. Back from a year ago is senior Kellie Fletcher, who finished third on the conference scoring chart (2.33 GPG).

SAN DIEGO STATE does not begin its season until Feb. 7 when Hartwick visits. Juniors Jenna Schuster (2.21 GPG) and Anna Gonzales (2.05 GPG) return from the `07 team that took fourth at the NCAA Tournament and won a conference-high 29 games.

RULON AND ADAMA NAMED MPSF MIKASA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - UCLA junior attacker Katie Rulon (San Diego, CA) scored a team-high 12 goals in four games at this past weekend's Michigan Invitational to lead the top-ranked Bruins to a 4-0 start. She put away four goals in each of the first two wins Saturday as UCLA defeated No. 11 Arizona State (14-5) and No. 14 UC San Diego (14-5). The Bruins also topped Indiana (15-6), and Colorado State (15-2) Sunday, as Rulon scored four times.....San Jose State senior goalkeeper Kendra Adama (Redlands, CA) also helped her team to a perfect 4-0 Michigan Invitational. She totaled 32 saves for the weekend, including 10 each vs. No. 14 UC San Diego and No. 18 Michigan. In a 9-8 win over the Wolverines, Adama blocked a five-meter penalty shot which was the difference in the outcome. Adama also shutout UCSD in the second and third quarters in a 9-5 win.
