STANFORD senior Laura Shane picked up 14 saves in goal to help lift her team to an 8-7 MPSF win over Oregon at home last Friday. She allowed only one goal in the second half, while the Cardinal scored four times to complete the comeback after trailing 6-4 at halftime. Sophomore Amanda Schwab's lone goal of the night happened to be the game-winner at the 10:38 mark. Sophomore Dana Lindsay and freshman Karen Nesbitt each scored twice, while sophomore Claire Hubbard dished out three assists. In the season opener on Feb. 2, Stanford exploded with 10 goals in the second half to beat Le Moyne 14-6. Senior Daphne Patterson put away five of her school record-tying six goals in the last frame. Conference action continues at home vs. UC Davis Wednesday (Feb. 13), followed by a neutral site contest vs. third-ranked Duke Sunday (Feb. 17) in Dallas, TX....

OREGON split a pair of season-opening MPSF road games this past weekend, edged at Stanford 8-7 and winning at UC Davis 15-5. The Ducks used a 9-2 second half to seal the game at Davis. Five different Ducks tallied two goals, including seniors Jana Bradley and Lindsay Killian, and freshman Anna Swicklick, all of whom contributed an assist as well. Senior goalkeeper Anna Popanyak recorded 11 saves in the win. Junior Ilsa Van Den Berg had three points in the loss, two goals and one assist. Popanyak totaled 13 saves. Oregon has the week off and will head east to Virginia Tech and No. 20 Richmond Feb. 22 & 24.....

UC DAVIS dropped its 2008 opener at home Sunday, 15-5 to Oregon in a conference game. Senior Katie McMahon led the Aggies with a game-high three goals. Freshman Gina Hoffmire and sophomore Molly Lapolla added one goal each to complete the scoring. Senior goalkeeper Hilary Harkins collected 11 saves. UC Davis continues MPSF action Wednesday (Feb. 13) when visiting last year's conference tournament champion Stanford....

DENVER opens up its season on the road against a pair of top-10 teams in No. 3 Duke Friday (Feb. 15) and No. 8 North Carolina Sunday (Feb. 17). MPSF Freshman of the Year Ali Flury (3.79 GPG) in addition to all-conference juniors Karen Morton (3.32 GPG) and Steph Coyne (3.26 GPG) are the top returnees on offense. Junior Megan Carver was also in the top-10 in scoring in '07 (2.58 GPG). Senior Becky Childs is back in goal, owning a conference-best 8.05 goals-against average last year. The Pioneers are preseason No. 16 in the lacrosse Magazine/CSTV poll and are coming off a 16-3 season, 5-0 in conference.

CALIFORNIA begins its season Sunday (Feb. 17), as top-ranked Northwestern visits. The Bears return senior Danni Zuralow who ranked 10th in the MPSF in Scoring last year (2.50 GPG) and junior Madeleine Dale, who finished 23rd (1.94 GPG).....

ST. MARY'S does not begin its season until Feb. 29 when hosting Mount St. Mary's. Top returnees include junior PJ Hainley (2.18 PPG) and sophomore Abbie Coleman (1.94 PPG) who each finished in the MPSF top-25 scoring last year. Junior goalkeeper Hilary Gardner collected 6.47 saves per game, ranking fourth in the conference.

STANFORD'S PATTERSON AND SHANE MPSF PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. -Stanford senior Daphne Patterson (New York, NY) tied a school record with six goals in an opening day win over 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Le Moyne, 14-6, on Feb. 2 in Palo Alto. She also dished out one assist. Only ahead by one at the half, Patterson exploded with five second half tallies, to put the game out of reach....senior goalkeeper and teammate Laura Shane (Baltimore, MD) stopped 14 shots in the first conference win of the season, 8-7 over Oregon at home last Friday. Shane gave up just one second half goal, allowing for the close, come-from-behind win.
