UCLA remained undefeated with five wins this week, topped off by an 8-4 victory over No. 2 USC in the Stanford Invitational Championship. The Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter lead in the finals. Senior Jillian Kraus combined for eight tournament goals and two hat tricks. No. 1 UCLA punched in plenty of goals during the week, also defeating No. 13 Michigan (16-0), No. 4 Hawaii (15-10), No. 7 San Jose State (12-7), and No. 10 Hartwick (19-7) in the home opener last Tuesday. The Bruins are very busy this week on an MPSF road trip, at UC Irvine Friday, CS Northridge Saturday, and Long Beach State Sunday (Feb. 15-17).
SAN DIEGO STATE got off to a quick start to begin its season, winning all five games during the week. The Aztecs won the home opener over No. 10 Hartwick (11-8), and took all four games at the UC San Diego Invitational. They defeated Maryland (13-6) and No. 16 CS Northridge (11-6) on Saturday, followed by No. 16 UC Santa Barbara (8-6) and No. 12 Loyola Marymount (10-9) Sunday. In the championship, LMU led the entire way until late in the fourth quarter. Junior Jenna Schuster knocked in the game-winner with less than one minute left, one of her three goals. SDSU next competes in the Princeton Invite (Feb. 16-17).
USC placed second in Palo Alto, with two Friday wins over California (9-3) and Stanford (5-4), and two Saturday losses to No. 10 Arizona State (8-5) and No. 1 UCLA (8-4) in the finals. Sophomore goalkeeper Tumua Anae tied a career-high 13 saves in the final game. The Trojans, who also pounded CS San Bernardino (23-5), are at UC Irvine Saturday and Arizona State Sunday (Feb. 16-17) in conference action.
STANFORD freshman Amber Oland had 13 saves and junior Kira Hillman scored three goals in a 10-6 win over No. 4 Hawaii for third place. The Cardinal also defeated No. 10 Arizona State (14-4) and No. 5 California (11-6), while their only tournament loss was to No. 2 USC (5-4). Stanford hosts Pacific Saturday (Feb. 16) in MPSF action followed by UC Davis Sunday (Feb. 17).
UC IRVINE took three of four at the UCSD Invite, topping Brown (17-9) and No. 14 Long Beach State (7-4) on Saturday. The Anteaters came up just short of No. 12 Loyola Marymount (9-8) Sunday, before beating UC Santa Barbara for third place (10-5). UCI grabbed a 4-0 first period lead en route to capturing third place. Senior Jessica Lewis scored eight goals on the week. UCLA and USC visit UCI Friday and Saturday (Feb. 15-16) in MPSF action.
HAWAII won five of seven games in its first week of '08 competition. The Rainbow Wahine picked up two conference wins, 22-8 at Pacific and 7-6 at No. 5 California. They also won two more close games at the Stanford Invite, 8-7 over No. 13 Michigan and 10-9 over No. 7 San Jose State, and placed fourth in the invitational following a 10-6 loss to the No. 3 Cardinal. Junior Kelly Mason scored 15 goals during the week, including four different hat tricks. Hawaii is not in action this week.
UC SANTA BARBARA split four UC San Diego Invitational games, winning 16-15 over No. 10 Hartwick in addition to an 8-6 upset over No. 8 UC Davis. The Gauchos lost twice Sunday, 8-6 to No. 6 San Diego State and 10-5 to No. 9 UC Irvine, resulting in a fourth-place ending. Junior Gillian Morgan had a team-high eight goals for the weekend. UCSB visits Long Beach State Saturday (Feb. 16) in a conference game.
CALIFORNIA won two of five games this past week, including a loss in a tight MPSF home game to No. 4 Hawaii, 7-6. The fifth-ranked Bears split at the Stanford Invite, with wins against No. 10 Arizona State (11-7) and No. 7 San Jose State (9-8) in overtime for fifth place. Senior Heather Stuart registered 10 saves vs. the Spartans, while sophomore Grace Reynolds put away a hat trick. Losses were to No. 2 USC (9-3) and No. 3 Stanford (11-6). Cal is next in action at the UC Irvine Tourney, Feb. 23-24.
SAN JOSE STATE placed sixth at the Stanford Invite, edged in overtime by No. 5 Cal, 9-8. The Spartans also fell 12-7 to No. 1 UCLA and 10-9 to No. 4 Hawaii, and earned a victory over No. 13 Michigan 13-5. Senior Kendra Adama totaled 30 saves in four games, including 10 in the fifth-place game. Seventh-ranked San Jose State is off until the UC Irvine Tournament, Feb. 23-24.
LONG BEACH STATE placed sixth at the UC San Diego Invitational with a 2-2 record. The 49ers knocked off No. 20 CS Bakersfield (11-7) and No. 15 UCSD (10-7), and fell to No. 9 UC Irvine (7-4) and No. 8 UC Davis (6-4) in the fifth-place game. In the win over the Tritons, freshman Kristen Stragier collected 15 saves, two shy of the school record. Senior Dayna Wawrzynski put away three goals. UC Santa Barbara and UCLA visit Long Beach Saturday and Sunday in MPSF action (Feb.16-17).
ARIZONA STATE pulled off the biggest upset in program history this past Saturday, 8-5 over No. 2 USC at the Stanford Invitational, led by junior Addison McGrath's four-goal effort. The 8-3 Sun Devils would end up 2-2 in Palo Alto, finishing seventh with a 9-6 win over No. 13 Michigan. Senior goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace recorded 15 saves in that game. ASU lost 14-4 to No. 3 Stanford and 11-7 to No. 5 Cal on day one. The home opener on Sunday (Feb. 17) is up next, an MPSF contest vs. USC.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE edged No. 19 Santa Clara 7-6 at the UCSD Invite, but fell to No. 6 San Diego State (11-6), No. 8 UC Davis (9-7) and host No. 15 UC San Diego (8-7) in a seventh-place overtime game. Senior Allison Brookes posted a hat trick in the win over the Broncos. The Matadors (3-3 overall) host top-ranked UCLA Saturday (Feb. 16).
PACIFIC lost two of three at home, including 22-8 in MPSF play to No. 4 Hawaii. The Tigers also lost 12-9 to CS Monterey Bay, and won their first of the season against Sonoma State, 8-7. Senior Kellie Fletcher nailed a hat trick in the win, while senior Jocelyn Gray had 10 saves. Pacific visits Stanford Saturday (Feb. 16) and hosts UC Davis and Fresno Pacific Sunday (Feb. 17).
RULON AND GONZALES NAMED MPSF MIKASA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - UCLA junior Katie Rulon (San Diego, CA/University HS) put away 12 goals in five wins last week, including 10 at the Stanford Invitational. She scored twice vs. USC in the finals.... San Diego State junior Anna Gonzales (Fresno, CA/Clovis West HS) broke out with 14 goals in five wins, leading the Aztecs to their first-ever UC San Diego Invitational title. Her efforts included five tallies vs. CS Northridge and four more to spark the comeback championship win over Loyola Marymount.
