CALIFORNIA was down 8-7 to rival Stanford with under 12 minutes left in regulation, but scored four of the final five goals on the day to pick up an 11-9 MPSF home win Saturday. The run was highlighted by sophomore Alex Tickner's unassisted game-winner with 5:34 to play. The Cardinal had early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first six minutes of the game, and eventually took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Senior Danni Zuralow knocked in five goals, her second straight hat trick. Junior Madeleine Dale added three goals. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson collected eight saves in just over 40 minutes of work. Freshman Allie Shropshire replaced her in the second half and picked up four saves in less than 20 minutes. California hosts Ohio State Sunday (Mar. 2).
OREGON combined for 31 goals on its weekend trip to Virginia, with wins over Virginia Tech 14-13 and 18th-ranked Richmond 17-5. After allowing the first goal to the Spiders, the Ducks used a 7-1 run to close the first half and cruised the rest of the game. Junior Ilsa Van Den Berg recorded game-highs of four goals and five points. Senior Theresa Waldron also nailed a hat trick. In the win over the Hokies, the Ducks erased a 12-10 deficit with 14 minutes left in the game, scoring the next four goals. Four Ducks' scored twice in Blacksburg. Senior Jen May had three points in each game, and totaled six points on four goals and two assists. Oregon has won three straight and hosts Le Moyne Saturday (Mar. 1).
DENVER scored the final six goals over the last 20 minutes and took care of Stony Brook in the home opener last Friday, 15-5. The 16th-ranked Pioneers received three outstanding efforts in particular, as junior Steph Coyne put away five goals and dished out three assists. Her eight total points matches a career-high and ties for the sixth best single-game point total in program history. Junior Karen Morton tallied six times with one assist and sophomore Ali Flury added a second half hat trick. Denver stays home for games on Tuesday (Feb. 26) against Duquesne and Sunday (Mar. 2) against No. 13 Georgetown.
STANFORD received a hat trick from sophomore Dana Lindsey in the 11-9 setback at California. Senior Megan McClain scored twice, including the first goal of the day about one minute in, and senior goalkeeper Laura Shane ended up with 10 saves. The Cardinal host Notre Dame Sunday (Mar. 2).
UC DAVIS competes Wednesday (Feb. 27) against Mount St. Mary's, when it will begin a six-game home stretch over a three week period. Ohio State visits Friday (Feb. 29). The Aggies are coming off a 13-7 conference loss at Stanford Feb. 13. Senior Hilary Harkins recorded 10 saves in goal, while seniors Katie McMahon and Katie McGovern led the Aggies with two goals each.
ST. MARY'S opens its season this Friday (Feb. 29) when hosting Mount St. Mary's. Boston College also visits Moraga Sunday (Mar. 2). Top returnees include junior PJ Hainley (2.18 PPG) and sophomore Abbie Coleman (1.94 PPG) who each finished in the MPSF top-25 scoring last year. Junior goalkeeper Hilary Gardner collected 6.47 saves per game, ranking fourth in the conference.
ZURALOW, MAY, COYNE NAMED MPSF TRI-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. -In an unusual tri-player of the week in the MPSF, California senior Danni Zuralow (Fairfax, VA), Oregon senior Jen May (Davidsonville, MD), and Denver junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, MD) are each honored by the conference for remarkable efforts and victories. Zuralow scored a game and career-high five goals vs. rival Stanford in an 11-9 win. May totaled four goals and two assists in two road wins at Virginia Tech and No. 18 Richmond. Coyne tied her career-high of eight points on five goals and three assists in a win over Stony Brook.
