CALIFORNIA improved to 4-0 overall by routing Sonoma State 21-4, and picking up two MPSF victories, 9-5 at home over No. 7 San Jose State and 14-3 at Pacific. The Bears raced out to a 13-0 lead against Sonoma, as 10 different players tallied. Sophomore Grace Reynolds scored nine goals in three games during the week. Senior Heather Stuart had 11 saves vs. the Spartans, and totaled 18 for the week. Conference action continues Thursday (Feb. 7) as No. 4 Hawaii visits. Cal also plays at the Stanford Invite Feb. 9-10, set to face Stanford, USC, and Arizona State.
SAN JOSE STATE split a pair of MPSF games this past weekend, coming up short at No. 5 California 9-5, before winning 17-4 at home over Pacific. Junior Juliet Moss posted a hat trick vs. the Tigers, as did Bridget McKee and Adrianna Vogt. 10 different Spartans' scored in the win. Moss also had two goals in the loss to the Bears. San Jose State will compete in the Stanford Invite this weekend (Feb. 9-10), first taking on Hawaii, followed by Michigan and UCLA.
LONG BEACH STATE opened its season at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament Saturday, and came up with two wins. The No. 13 49ers edged the host Roadrunners, 8-7, and Fresno Pacific 22-7. The 22 goals vs. the Sunbirds was an all-time school record, while the 15-goal margin was the second largest. Sophomore Branwyn Lee had four goals vs. FPU, as did sophomore Cecilia Canetti vs. CSUB. Freshman Kristen Straiger stopped nine shots in her first collegiate game in the win over CSUB. Long Beach State partakes in the UCSD Invite this weekend (Feb. 8-9).
UC SANTA BARBARA lit up the Cal State Bakersfield scoreboard this past Saturday, combining for 40 goals in two wins. The No. 17 Gauchos defeated Fresno Pacific 26-3, and the host Roadrunners, 14-13 in overtime. Leading 7-1 after one quarter vs. FPU, UCSB scored 14 unanswered goals over periods two and three. In the next game, down by one after the first OT period, the Gauchos scored three times in the second OT to grab the tight victory. Junior Gillian Morgan combined for nine goals on the day and 13 Gauchos' scored in the first game. UCSB heads to the UCSD Invite Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 9-10).
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE is off to a 2-0 start with a pair of wins at the CS Bakersfield Tournament Sunday. The No. 18 Matadors defeated the host Roadrunners 13-7 and Fresno Pacific 16-2. CSUN used a 4-0 fourth quarter vs. CSUB to put the game away, while junior Jessica Coy and sophomore Kristin McLaughlin each recorded a hat trick. Northridge competes in the UCSD Invite this weekend (Feb. 9-10).
ARIZONA STATE tied a program record with 20 goals Saturday as the No. 11 Sun Devils routed Concordia 20-3. ASU also won at Cal Baptist 11-4 and vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 19-2. All three games were played in Riverside, CA. Kari Walsh netted a career-best four goals vs. the Eagles. Junior Addison McGrath totaled nine goals in three games and senior goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace had 16 saves vs. the Lancers. 6-1 Arizona State heads to the Stanford Invite this weekend (Feb. 9-10). At least three of four ASU opponents will be ranked in the nation's top-5, including Stanford and California on day one, and USC on day two.
UCLA improved to 5-0 with a 13-6 win at No. 12 Loyola Marymount Saturday. The top-ranked Bruins scored early and often, racing out to a 6-1 lead in the opening period. Several Bruins' scored twice, but the hat trick belonged to junior Tanya Gandy. Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen had five saves. UCLA next competes in its home opener Tuesday (Feb. 5) vs. No. 10 Hartwick, and is scheduled to meet Hawaii, Michigan, and San Jose State at the Stanford Invite (Feb. 9-10).
USC won its 2008 opener, 16-3 over No. 10 Hartwick. The Trojans got off to a 9-1 halftime lead, and had 10 different players find the back of the cage by the end of the game. USC has won 39 straight at home and hosts CS San Bernardino Thursday (Feb. 7). The Trojans will also meet Stanford, California, and Arizona State at the Stanford Invite (Feb. 9-10).
UC IRVINE topped No. 10 Hartwick, 6-4 at home Saturday, in the '08 opener for the ninth-ranked Anteaters. After allowing the first goal, UCI used a 6-1 run to put it away by mid fourth quarter. Junior Julia Fancher tallied a game-high three goals. Senior Lauren Machanis stopped 10 shots in goal. UCI returns to action this weekend at the UCSD Invite, first meeting Brown (Feb. 9).
STANFORD junior Lauren Silver scored the first four goals of the season opener, and went on to score five on the day, as No. 3 Stanford took care of No. 19 Santa Clara, 16-6 in Palo Alto Sunday. Freshman Kim Krueger also scored a hat trick. Freshman Amber Oland recorded 11 saves in three periods of goalkeeping. The Cardinal host the Stanford Invite Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 9-10), first taking on Arizona State, followed by USC and California.
PACIFIC dropped two MPSF contests, 14-3 at home to No. 5 California and 17-4 at No. 7 San Jose State. Senior Kellie Fletcher scored twice in each game, while senior Jocelyn Gray collected 14 saves in goal vs. the Bears. The Tigers return home Wednesday (Feb. 6) to face No. 4 Hawaii, followed by CS Monterey Bay and Sonoma State Saturday (Feb. 9).
HAWAII opens its season at Pacific Wednesday (Feb. 6) and California Thursday (Feb.7), immediately jumping into MPSF action. The Wahine then compete at the Stanford Invite, scheduled to face San Jose State, UCLA, and Michigan (Feb. 9-10). SAN DIEGO STATE begins its season Thursday (Feb. 7), hosting Hartwick. The Aztecs will also participate in the UCSD Invite this weekend (Feb. 9-10). SDSU finished fourth at the NCAA Tournament last year and won a conference-high 29 games.
CAL'S STUART NAMED MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - California senior goalkeeper Heather Stuart (Moraga, CA/Campolindo HS) totaled 16 saves in a pair of MPSF wins over No. 7 San Jose State (9-5) and at Pacific (14-3). In the home win over the previously unbeaten Spartans, Stuart allowed just one first half goal within an 11-save effort, including a blocked penalty shot. She also allowed only three goals and saved five in the other conference win at Pacific. Stuart finished the week with two saves in the first quarter vs. Sonoma State.
