STANFORD will host No. 2 Maryland Saturday (Mar. 22). The No. 14 Cardinal (2-1 MPSF/6-2 overall) is unbeaten on its home field at 6-0, coming off a 14-10 win over Boston College and a huge 10-8 upset over fifth-ranked Pennsylvania, last year's NCAA runner-up. The Cardinal also has a home win over then No. 10 Notre Dame. Senior Daphne Patterson averages 2.88 points per game (23 Pts/8 GP). Senior Megan McClain has knocked home three game-winning goals this year, a conference best. Senior goalkeeper Laura Shane leads the MPSF in both saves per game (12.38) and goals-against average (9.25).
DENVER exploded for 41 goals last week, in a 21-13 win over Connecticut and 20-14 win over Colgate. Tied at 8, the No. 19 Pioneers used a 6-0 scoring run late in the first half and into the second to open it up. Junior Steph Coyne was unstoppable all week, totaling 10 points vs. the Raiders on three goals and seven assists, and tying the all-time team record for most assists in a game. Against the Huskies, she combined for nine points on three goals and six assists, giving her a 19-point week. Denver's outburst carried over to Monday with a 21-10 win over Marist as sophomore Ali Flury had four goals and Coyne had four assists.
CALIFORNIA senior Brittany Aungier tallied a career-high six points on four goals and two assists in leading the Bears to a 14-8 home win over Quinnipiac last Friday. Cal never trailed in the contest and used a 6-1 second half run to put it away. Senior Danni Zuralow had one goal and dished out three assists. Cal stays home this week for George Washington Thursday (Mar. 20).
OREGON split a pair of home games this past week, coming up short to No. 7 North Carolina 14-9 and defeating Columbia 17-10. In the win over the Lions, junior Ilsa van den Berg scored four goals, while seniors Jana Bradley and Lindsey Killian each netted three. Bradley's hat trick came within an 11-0 Duck outburst over much of the first half and part of the second. No. 12 Oregon returns to San Diego Saturday (Mar. 22) to face Johns Hopkins on a neutral site.
UC DAVIS fell 12-9 to Temple last Thursday, though bounced back with a convincing 17-6 home win over Long Island Monday. The Aggies turned a 6-4 halftime lead into a 17-6 rout, paced by seniors Katie McMahon and Katie McGovern with four goals each. McMahon added two assists, while sophomore Molly Lapolla contributed three goals and two assists. UC Davis is off this week for final exams, then hits the east coast against Le Moyne, Canisius, and Connecticut.
ST. MARY'S scored a season-high 12 goals Thursday in Moraga in an 18-12 loss to Monmouth. Junior Chloe Dee tallied a career and game-high six goals that night. Junior P.J. Hainley also recorded a hat trick. Dee came back Saturday to add four more goals to her season total in a 15-11 loss to Long Island. The Gaels also fell 21-10 to George Washington Monday, and now travel to the Spring Fling Tournament in Florida, taking on Central Connecticut State Wed. (Mar. 19) and Lafayette Thurs. (Mar. 20).
COYNE NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - Denver junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, MD) combined for a remarkable 19 points in two games last week, leading the No. 19 Pioneers to big wins over Connecticut (21-13) and Colgate (20-14). Her seven assists against the Raiders ties an all-time single-game team record. She also had six assists vs. the Huskies and nailed a hat trick in each game. Coyne, who was also a Feb. 25 recipient of this award, has dished out 25 assists in 2008 and ranks fourth on Denver's single-season list.
