UCLA moved its overall win streak to 29 straight games with an 8-7 MPSF win at USC Friday. The win also snapped the Trojans' 42-game home win streak, dating back to 2002. The top-ranked Bruins jumped out to leads of 4-1 after one period and 5-2 at the half. Senior Courtney Matthewson registered a game and season-high four goals, including the game-winner with 2:31 left in regulation, which broke the 7-7 tie. UCLA is off until it travels to Hawaii Mar. 26-28 to face the Canadian national team and the Rainbow Wahine.
ARIZONA STATE picked up a huge 8-7 upset over No. 4 California Saturday in Tempe. Junior Addison McGrath knocked in three goals to lift ASU on offense, while senior Caylinn Wallace was the defensive hero with 15 saves in the cage. The Sun Devils are not in action this week.
HAWAII extended its win streak to five with three wins over the weekend in Honolulu, topping No. 18 UCSB (11-5), Cal Baptist (12-7) and No. 13 CS Northridge (15-9). Junior Angela Turnbull scored a game-high five goals against the Matadors. Junior Kelly Mason scored a hat trick against both MPSF teams. Sophomore Leonie Van Der Molen put in six goals vs. the Lancers. The Rainbow Wahine have a series of exhibition games this week before hosting San Jose State Saturday (Mar. 22).
SAN DIEGO STATE won all five games in its own Aztec Invitational over the weekend, improving to 21-2 overall, and earning its third straight 20-win season. The Aztecs won MPSF games over Pacific (14-6) and Long Beach State (9-7), then took out Colorado State (13-6), No. 20 Princeton (10-2), and CS Bakersfield (13-7). In the 49er game, SDSU was threatened for three quarters, but came back for a 4-1 fourth. Junior Anna Gonzales scored three goals and senior Heather Fenske tallied 13 saves in goal. SDSU is idle until hosting Cal and USC (Mar. 27-29).
SAN JOSE STATE edged No. 10 UC Davis 10-9 in overtime this past Saturday. Senior Beth Harberts and sophomore Bridget McKee nailed hat tricks and senior goalkeeper Kendra Adama picked up three of her 11 saves in overtime. The Spartans now prepare for a visit to Hawaii Saturday (Mar. 22).
UC IRVINE scored seven straight goals over the second and third quarters to defeat No. 15 Indiana 10-1 Thursday at the Anteater Complex. Three players scored twice while senior goalkeeper Lauren Machanis stopped 13 shots. UCI is off until March 26, when visiting Pomona-Pitzer. USC made a furious fourth quarter comeback vs. top-ranked UCLA Friday, but fell 8-7. Sophomore Tumua Anae stopped seven shots in the cage. Sophomore Alexandra Kiss and senior Veronika Bartunkova each scored twice. The Trojans are off until hosting UCSB Mar. 28, followed by a visit to San Diego State Mar. 29.
LONG BEACH STATE split two games in San Diego last Saturday, a 9-7 MPSF loss to No. 6 San Diego State followed by a 14-6 neutral site win over Colorado State. Freshman Lauren Sieprath tallied a career-high five goals against the Rams, while senior Brittany Thornback added three. Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Stragier had seven saves against the Aztecs. The 49ers host Maryland and No. 20 Princeton for a Tuesday (Mar. 18) doubleheader.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE fell 15-9 in MPSF action at No. 5 Hawaii Sunday. The Matadors travel to California Saturday (Mar. 22). PACIFIC won the last of its five games over the weekend in San Diego. The Tigers used a strong fourth quarter to get past Colorado State 10-9. Pacific had an 8-6 deficit entering the fourth quarter. Senior Kellie Fletcher slammed in six goals. CS Northridge visits Stockton on Friday (Mar. 21) in a conference game.
CALIFORNIA was upset by No. 8 Arizona State Saturday, 8-7, on the Sun Devil campus. The Bears host CS Northridge Saturday (Mar. 22) as MPSF action resumes.
UC SANTA BARBARA fell 11-5 at No. 5 Hawaii Saturday. The Gauchos are off until a visit to USC Mar. 28.
STANFORD was off this past week and is not in action until visiting Hawaii Mar. 24.
MATHEWSON AND WALLACE MPSF MIKASA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - UCLA senior Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA) scored a game and season-high four goals as top-ranked UCLA snapped a 42-game USC home win streak dating back six years. In the 8-7 win, the Trojans scored three straight goals late in the game, before Mathewson's game-winner at the 2:31 mark. She has now scored in each of her last 11 games.....Arizona State senior goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills HS) tallied her third straight 15-save game as the No. 8 Sun Devils recorded one of their biggest wins in program history, 8-7 over No. 4 California. Wallace is now the MPSF leader in saves with 225 (10.23/GM).
