CALIFORNIA defeated Connecticut 16-13 Friday, as senior Brittany Aungier turned in another big outing with seven points. She tallied two goals and a Cal single-game record five assists, while sophomore Alyse Kennedy recorded four goals including the game-winner. Cal used a 7-3 second half to chalk up the win. The Bears, who had their five-game win streak snapped at Columbia Monday (11-7), host Denver in the final regular season game Saturday (Apr. 26). A win would claim the regular season title outright along with a No. 1 MPSF Tournament seed.
DENVER junior Steph Coyne combined for three goals and three assists in a 19-8 win at home over UC Davis Friday in MPSF action. The No. 18 Pioneers raced out to a 14-2 lead at the half. Denver stayed unbeaten in conference action with a 13-9 win over No. 19 Stanford at home Sunday, a game in which DU trailed 4-0. Runs of 6-0 and 7-0 propelled the win. Junior Megan Carver came off the bench to score six points on five goals and one assist. Junior Karen Morton tallied four goals. Senior Kelly O'Connell caused a DU single-game record eight turnovers. A regular season title and No. 1 seed is on the line at California Saturday (Apr. 26). A trip to St. Mary's Sunday (Apr. 27) is the final game heading into the tournament.
OREGON picked up a 12-11 overtime win at Vermont Friday, as junior Cara Mead punched in the game-winner with 1:05 left in the extra session. Senior Theresa Waldron combined for two goals and four assists and senior Jen May scored another hat trick for the Ducks. Junior Anna Popanyak collected 14 saves in the crease. Oregon then dropped a tough 13-12 double-overtime decision at No. 15 New Hampshire Sunday. The Ducks now await the MPSF Tournament, Apr. 30-May 3 in Berkeley, CA, where they will be seeded fourth and playing No. 5 seed UC Davis in the first-round.
UC DAVIS senior Katie McMahon had four points in the Friday loss at Denver while senior goalkeeper Hilary Harkins had nine saves. The Aggies came back on Senior Day Sunday for a 14-13 win over St. Mary's as McMahon, senior Katie McGovern, and sophomore Olivia Jarem all nailed hat tricks. The Aggies will be the five-seed at the MPSF Tournament, Apr. 30-May 3.
STANFORD came up short 13-9 at Denver Sunday, and will therefore be seeded third at the MPSF Tournament. Sophomore Claire Hubbard recorded two goals and three assists. The Cardinal wrap up the regular season at No. 19 Dartmouth Sunday (Apr. 27), and will begin the conference tournament against No. 6 seed St. Mary's the following week.
ST. MARY'S was edged 14-13 at UC Davis Sunday in an MPSF game. Sophomore Abbie Coleman registered two goals and four assists. The Gaels host Denver Sunday (Apr. 27) in the regular season finale, and then face No. 3 Stanford in the first-round.
O'CONNELL AND AUNGIER NAMED MPSF PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - Denver senior defender Kelly O'Connell (Baltimore, MD) combined for 12 caused turnovers, five ground balls, and four draw controls to help the Pioneers to wins over UC Davis and No. 19 Stanford. In her final home game Sunday, she caused a DU single-game record eight turnovers....California senior Brittany Aungier (Syracuse, NY) dished out a school-record five assists in a 16-13 win at Connecticut. She added two goals for a seven-point total. The Bears have won five straight, all on the road. NOTE: O'Connell and Aungier meet one-another Saturday with a No. 1 seed and regular season title on the line.
