California Takes First at Stanford Open

#2 CALIFORNIA (3-0) placed first of three teams (356.45) at the Stanford Open, ahead of No. 6 Stanford and No. 8 Nebraska. The Bears were led by sophomore Kyle Bunthuwong who won the All-Around title with a career-high (88.7). He also placed third on the floor (15.2) which was also a career-best. Freshman Glen Ishino won the pommel horse (15.4), leading Cal's team win on that event by over six points. Kyson Bunthuwong took first on the parallel bars (15.1). Cal is off this week.

#14 AIR FORCE (1-7) set a season-high team mark (325.9) in a narrow setback at No. 10 Temple last Sunday. Freshman Jacob Houder won the parallel bars (13.85), while freshman Chase Nobles tied for the Pommel Horse title (13.7), which was the second-best score in Air Force history. Senior Jake Schonig claimed first on the still rings event (14.05) and sophomore Nash Mills won the All-Around (78.2) in his collegiate debut. Saturday, Air Force finished fifth of six teams at the Navy Open, placing ahead of MIT. Freshman Joel Uptmor set an Academy record on vault (15.55). Houder also won the parallel bars (13.8) and nailed the fifth-best high-bar score in school history (14.1). The Falcons return home Saturday (Jan. 31) to take on service academy rival Army.

#6 STANFORD (1-2) hosted the Stanford Open last Saturday and finished ahead of No. 8 Nebraska and behind No. 4 California. The Cardinal recorded a team score of 352.3. Sophomore Tim Gentry won two event titles on the still rings (15.1) and vault (16.05). Greg Ter-Zakhariants won the floor (15.6) and sophomore Josh Dixon placed third All-Around (86.8). Selected Stanford gymnasts will individually compete at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas next week.

#8 NEBRASKA (1-4) scored a 334.7 to place third at Saturday's Stanford Open to No. 4 California and the host No. 6 Cardinal. Senior All-American T.J. Schmidt turned in a third-place finish on the pommel horse (14.55), while junior John Robinson recorded a fifth-place all-around score (82.65). The Huskers step away from team competition until Feb. 14, when they face Minnesota and host Iowa in a tri-meet in Iowa City, IA. Schmidt, however, will partake in the Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Feb. 6-8.

#1 OKLAHOMA (3-0) was off this past week and hosts club-squad Texas Saturday (Jan. 31).

Woodland, Calif. - California sophomore Kyle Bunthuwong (El Cerrito, CA) captured the all-around title(88.700), leading the Bears to a first-place finish at the Stanford Open this past weekend. In addition to a career-high All-Around mark, Bunthuwong also set a personal best with a third-place result on the floor (15.200) as well as another career-effort on the still rings (14.550).
