Stanford 2-0 in MPSF Play and Overall

OREGON (1-1 MPSF, 1-1 overall) sophomore Alex Breiner recorded a natural hat-trick to lead the Ducks to a 13-6 MPSF win over UC Davis Saturday in Eugene. She put away three straight goals over a span of 2:50, as UO raced out to an early 9-1 lead. Nine Ducks' scored in the win. Senior goalkeeper Anna Popanyak recorded her 400th-career save. Oregon plays its first road games of the season this week, visiting No. 9 North Carolina Friday (Feb. 20) and Stony Brook Sunday (Feb. 22).
NO. 18 STANFORD (2-0 MPSF, 2-0 overall) scored 16 first-half goals en route to a 20-1 home opening MPSF win last Thursday (Feb. 12) over upstart program Fresno State. Karen Nesbitt recorded three goals and one assist, while a total of 13 Cardinal players scored. This was the first home win for new head coach Amy Bokker. Albany and second-ranked Syracuse visit Palo Alto this week, Tuesday (Feb. 17) and Friday (Feb. 20) respectively.
NO. 19 DENVER (0-0 MPSF, 1-2 overall) split two games this past week, defeated by third-ranked Duke (17-8) Friday, before bouncing back against Canisius (15-7) Sunday. Becca Steinberg and Ali Flury scored two goals apiece in the loss. Flury, along with Megan Carver and Karen Morton, tallied four goals in the win, as the Pioneers used a 10-3 second-half to put it away. Carver also dished out two assists for six points. Denver travels to Pittsburgh, PA this week, taking on Binghamton Friday (Feb. 20) and host Duquesne Sunday (Feb. 22).
CALIFORNIA (1-0 MPSF, 1-1 overall) dropped a 19-7 to No. 3 Duke Sunday in Denver. Lauren Johnson and Sam Price were the multiple-goal scorers with two apiece. Senior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson collected 11 saves in a complete game. The Bears compete in their home openers this weekend, taking on Albany Friday (Feb. 20) and second-ranked Syracuse Sunday (Feb. 22).
FRESNO STATE (0-2 MPSF, 0-3 overall) tallied its first goal in program history last Thursday (Feb. 12) in a 20-1 loss at No. 18 Stanford. With 4:21 left in the game, sophomore Heather Jack put away an unassisted close-range goal. Monday, Molly Sovacool tallied the second goal in program history in a 20-1 loss to Canisius in Denver. The Bulldogs are off until Feb. 28, when MPSF action resumed at UC Davis.
UC DAVIS (0-1 MPSF, 0-1 overall) fell 13-6 at Oregon in the season opener last Saturday. Molly Lapolla scored twice. The Aggies continue MPSF action Sunday (Feb. 22) at St. Mary's. UC Davis won a pair of very close outcomes in the 2008 meetings, 14-13 and 13-11.
ST. MARY'S (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 overall) lost its '09 opener to Albany this past Sunday in Moraga, 14-9. P.J. Hainley scored four goals and Juliet Munroe put in three. The Gaels host UC Davis Sunday (Feb. 22) in their first conference contest.
ANNIE READ MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Woodland, Calif. -Stanford sophomore goalkeeper Annie Read (Riverside, CT/Greenwich HS) allowed only one goal, the fewest a Stanford net-minder has allowed in 10 years, in a 20-1 MPSF home win over Fresno State last Thursday. Read faced only four shots, though one was on a breakaway and another in free-position. She has allowed just six goals while making 10 saves in her first two collegiate games.
