San Jose Finishes Unbeaten in Michigan

SAN JOSE STATE (3-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was the only team to come out of the Michigan Kick-off unbeaten this past weekend. The No. 6 Spartans ousted Colorado State (13-3), No. 19 Indiana (8-6), and UC San Diego (15-6) to start 2010 in Ann Arbor, MI. Bridget McKee posted four goals over the Rams, as did Adrianna Vogt vs. the Tritons. McKee added a hat trick against the Hoosiers. Megan Minson had 13 saves in the IU game. SJSU meets Santa Clara, CS Monterey Bay, UC Davis, and Sonoma State at the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley this weekend.

SAN DIEGO STATE (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three of four to open its season at the Michigan Kick-off, including a 7-6 overtime upset over five-time defending national champion UCLA. The Aztecs erased a three-goal halftime deficit in earning their first win over the Bruins since 1995. Other wins were over UC San Diego (19-8) and Colorado State (13-6), before a loss in the finale to host No. 10 Michigan (9-4). Ronni Gautschi combined for nine weekend goals, including five vs. UCSD. The Aztecs are off until its Feb. 5 home opener against Marist.

UCLA (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) began its quest for a sixth straight national championship with three wins at the Michigan Kick-off. The Bruins defeated No. 19 Indiana (12-6), the host No. 10 Wolverines (10-7) and UC San Diego (10-4). Grace Reynolds scored four goals in the opener vs. the Hoosiers, three vs. the Tritons and two in the loss to SDSU. Priscilla and Sarah Orozco combined for seven of the 10 against Michigan, while Caitlin Dement recorded 10 saves in goal against UM. UCLA is off until Feb. 6-7 when it competes at the Stanford Invitational.

CALIFORNIA (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) is this year's host of the NorCal Invitational to begin the season this week, where five games are on schedule. UC Santa Barbara opens the Cal season Friday (Jan. 29), followed by CS Monterey Bay, Sonoma State, UC Davis, and Santa Clara all on Saturday (Jan. 30). The Bears return five All-Americans from last year's 31-8 team, including Meghan Corso and Camille Hewko.

STANFORD (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) begins the 2010 season as the preseason No. 1 team, opening at the NorCal Invitational Saturday (Jan. 30) against UC Santa Barbara. The Cardinal also faces CS Monterey Bay and Pacific in Berkeley Sunday (Jan. 31). Fresh off 26 wins and a third-place national finish in 2009, Stanford returns All-Americans Jessica Steffens and Melissa Seidemann, who was also the 2009 MPSF Newcomer of the Year.

HAWAII (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season at the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley, CA this weekend. The No. 4 Wahine take on UC Santa Barbara and Pacific Friday (Jan. 29), followed by UC Davis and Cal State East Bay Sunday (Jan. 31). Hawaii recorded a 19-10 last year, resulting in its third NCAA Tournament appearance. Five starters return from that team, highlighted by All-Americans Leonie Van Der Molen and Dagmar Genee.

ARIZONA STATE (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) competes in a tripleheader Saturday (Jan. 30) in Irvine, CA to start the season. The No. 8 Sun Devils face CS Bakersfield, Long Beach State, and the host Anteaters in the UC Irvine Tournament. Arizona State returns one of the top scorers in the conference from last year's 13-win team in junior Lynlee Smith.

USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) does not begin the season until it visits Long Beach State on Feb. 4. Last year's 26-2 and national runner-up team returns five All-Americans, including Kami Craig, Joelle Bekhazi, and goalkeeper Tumua Anae.

GAUTSCHI MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Diego State senior two-meter Ronni Gautschi (Morgan Hill, CA/Live Oak HS) scored nine goals in four games (2.25 GPG) in leading her team to three wins at the Michigan Kick-off to start the season. She tallied five goals against UC San Diego in the Aztecs' opener, three vs. Colorado State, and one more in the squad's first win over No. 3 UCLA since 1995. Gautschi also combined for eight drawn ejections in the tournament.
