MPSF Turns in 19-0 Weekend

STANFORD (3-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three games at the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley to begin its season, defeating UC Santa Barbara (15-5), CS Monterey Bay (16-2), and Pacific (19-8). Freshman Annika Dries was the leader vs. UCSB with four goals in her collegiate debut. Pallavi Menon had four goals vs. Monterey Bay, while Melissa Seidemann and Alyssa Lo recorded three goals each against Pacific. The Cardinal plays four games in its Stanford Invitational this weekend (Feb. 6-7), hosting Michigan, USC, and San Jose State, and one other team.
SAN JOSE STATE (7-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) stayed unbeaten with four wins at the NorCal Invitational in Berkeley this past weekend. The Spartans defeated CS Monterey Bay (10-1), Santa Clara (12-6), Sonoma State (17-3), and UC Davis (6-3). Bridget McKee, Adrianna Vogt, and Anna Natalizio all had hat tricks vs. Sonoma. Kelly Stewart tallied three goals against Santa Clara. The Spartans compete at the Stanford Invitational this weekend, taking on USC, Stanford, Michigan, plus an opponent to be named.
CALIFORNIA (5-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won all five games at its NorCal Invitational, including four Saturday by a combined score of 77-14. Friday, the Bears ousted UC Santa Barbara (12-7), followed by Sonoma State (23-3), UC Davis (11-5), Santa Clara (16-2), and CS Monterey Bay (27-4). Meghan Corso and Camille Hewko tallied three goals each vs. Santa Clara, while Stephanie Schnugg did the same vs. UCD. Lauren Barron recorded five goals each against CSUMB and CSUS. Cal takes on UCLA, Arizona State, Hawaii, and one other at the Stanford Invite.
HAWAII (4-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won all four games at the NorCal Invitational to begin the season. The No. 3 Wahine got past UC Santa Barbara (7-5), Pacific (11-5), CS East Bay (14-6), and UC Davis (17-4). Ryan Hanson-Swaner scored four goals against the Aggies, while Jana Liessman led with four vs. East Bay. Monika Eggens combined 12 weekend goals. Hawaii meets UCLA, California, Arizona State, and one other team at Stanford.
ARIZONA STATE (3-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won a tripleheader Saturday in Irvine, CA to start the season, by a combined 45-5. The No. 8 Sun Devils took out three ranked teams in CS Bakersfield (19-1), Long Beach State (13-1), and the host No. 9 UC Irvine (13-3). Annabelle Carter posted six goals and Dana Harvey collected 14 saves against the Anteaters. Mariam Salloum totaled seven tournament goals, while Lynlee Smith and Nikki Unbehaun recorded five each. Hawaii, Cal, and UCLA are scheduled for ASU this weekend at the Stanford Invite.
SAN DIEGO STATE (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off last week, and hosts Marist in Friday's (Feb. 5) home opener, before competing in the UC San Diego Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The Aztecs won three of four to open its season at the Michigan Kick-off, including a 7-6 overtime upset over five-time defending national champion UCLA. Ronni Gautschi combined for nine goals in that tournament and was named MPSF Player of the Week.
UCLA (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off this past week in preparation for the Stanford Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The Bruins face California and Hawaii on day one, followed by Arizona State and an opponent to be named on Sunday. UCLA won three of four to start the year in the Michigan Kick-off.
USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) begins the season with a visit to Long Beach State Thursday (Feb. 4), followed by competition at the Stanford Invitational. The Trojans meet San Jose State, Stanford, and Michigan this weekend. Last year's 26-2 and national runner-up Trojan team returns five All-Americans, including Kami Craig, Joelle Bekhazi, and goalkeeper Tumua Anae.
MONIKA EGGENS MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hawaii sophomore attacker Monika Eggens (Pitt Meadows, B.C/Pitt Meadows Secondary) led the Rainbow Wahine to a 4-0 record at the Northern California Invitational. Eggens had 12 goals, including three hat tricks, over four games. She had four goals against Pacific and three goals against No. 15 UC Santa Barbara. Against No. 14 UC Davis on the final day, Eggens scored twice and would finish off the tournament with another hat trick against Cal State East Bay.
