MPSF Heads to UC Irvine

STANFORD (9-0 Overall/1-0 MPSF) stayed unbeaten on the year with a 9-0 mark, taking a 10-4 MPSF opener at San Jose State last Saturday. The Cardinal used a 5-0 third quarter to break the game open. Sophomore Melissa Seidemann recorded a game-high three goals, while Kelly Eaton, Pallavi Menon, and Kelly Holshouser scored two apiece. Stanford opens the UC Irvine Invitational with UC San Diego at 9 am on Saturday, followed by either Arizona State or CS Northridge in the afternoon.
UCLA (9-3 Overall/1-0 MPSF) picked up an MPSF-opening win at No. 3 California last Saturday, 7-6, avenging an earlier loss to the Bears at the Stanford Invite. The Bruins were down 5-4 after three quarters. Priscilla Orozco and Brooke Martin scored two goals apiece. Sunday, goalkeeper Caitlin Dement tallied a 2010 MPSF-best 22 saves and Sarah Orozco put away a career-high four goals in an 8-3 win over UC Davis. UCLA also blasted host Sonoma State in game two, 24-4. The Bruins play UCSB and either Michigan or San Diego State Saturday in Irvine.
USC (6-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) posted an easy 15-5 win over defending Big West Champion UC Irvine on Saturday, racing out to an 8-2 lead by halftime. Alexandra Kiss and Kally Lucas each tallied hat tricks and Tumua Anae picked up seven saves. The Trojans' MPSF opener is Thursday (Feb. 25) against Hawaii, before returning to Irvine for the weekend invitational, meeting Long Beach State and either San Jose State or Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
CALIFORNIA (10-2 Overall/2-1 MPSF) had a five-goal outing from sophomore Emily Csikos, though came up short in its final home game of the year last Saturday to No. 4 UCLA, 7-6. Stephanie Peckham collected eight saves in goal. The Bears compete in the UC Irvine Invitational, opening with UC Davis Saturday, followed by either Hawaii or the host Anteaters later that day.
SAN JOSE STATE (7-6 Overall/0-2 MPSF) dropped an MPSF home game to No. 1 Stanford, 10-4 on Saturday. The Spartans were only down 4-2 at the half. Goalkeeper Megan Minson collected 11 saves, which was a conference-high for the week. Four Spartans' scored once. San Jose State opens with Loyola Marymount at the UCI Invitational, and also takes on either USC or Long Beach State on day one.
SAN DIEGO STATE (8-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off last week and returns to action this weekend (Feb. 27-28) at the UC Irvine Invitational. The Aztecs are scheduled to face Michigan and either UCSB or UCLA on day one. SDSU is coming off a road split from Feb. 12-13, losing at UC Irvine (5-6) and winning at Long Beach State (8-5).
HAWAII (5-4 Overall/0-1 MPSF) has been off since placing sixth at the Stanford Invite (Feb. 6-7). The Rainbow Wahine returns to the pool when visiting USC Thursday (Feb. 25) in conference action, followed by the UC Irvine Invitational (Feb. 27-28). The Wahine plays the host UCI Saturday at 12:45pm, before facing either California or UC Davis in the early evening of day one.
ARIZONA STATE (4-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) has been off since winning the seventh-place game over San Jose State (11-3) at the Stanford Invite (Feb. 7). The Sun Devils take on CS Northridge as well as either top-ranked Stanford or UC San Diego Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.
CAITLIN DEMENT MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement (Chino, CA/Ayala HS) combined for 27 saves in two games, as the Bruins won their MPSF opener at No. 3 California (7-6) and a non-conference game vs. No. 15 UC Davis (8-3). She had a career and 2010 conference-high 22 saves vs. the Aggies and allowed only six goals to the Bears, half of their season average. Also Nominated: Melissa Seidemann (STAN)
KATE BALDONI MPSF MIKASA NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Stanford freshman goalkeeper Kate Baldoni (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS) allowed only one goal in each of the first two quarters in the 10-4 MPSF-opening win at San Jose State. She had one save in one half of action in her conference debut, and becomes the third straight Cardinal to win this award. Baldoni was a high school teammate of last week's recipient, Victoria Kennedy.
