Rising Waves Take Out Another No. 1

PEPPERDINE (4-3 MPSF, 4-4 overall) erased a two-set deficit at UCSB last Wednesday, en route to a 3-2 win, as Maurice Torres had 18 kills and Tyler Jaynes added 14 kills (.579) and six blocks. The week was far from over. Friday, the Waves knocked off their second No. 1 ranked opponent of the year, 3-1 at CS Northridge. Pep held advantages of .287-.169 hitting and 20-10 blocking that night. Cory Riecks hit .478 (14-3-23) and Jaynes tallied 11 blocks.
UCLA (5-3 MPSF, 6-5 overall) won a pair of 3-1 decisions at No. 6 Hawaii this past week. Kevin Ker set the Bruins to .371 and .356 hitting attacks, while firing off five total aces. Garrett Muagututia combined for 46 kills with a .455 hitting clip over the two wins. Thomas Amberg hit .594 in the two-match series (22-3-32). Nick Vogel had 11 blocks on night two. UCLA stays on the road as it travels to Stanford and Pacific this weekend.
LONG BEACH STATE (4-2 MPSF, 5-4 overall) received a 20-kill (.471), five-ace, and five-block outing from Dean Bittner in a 3-1 win at UC San Diego Friday. Antwain Aguillard added 16 kills (.571). The Beach hit .364 on the night, recorded 13 blocks, and served 10 aces. A trip to Northridge is next up Thursday, before UCSB visits Friday.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (6-2 MPSF, 9-2 overall) won its 15th-straight over USC last Wednesday in five sets, before the loss to Pepperdine Friday. Tanner Nua had a 17-kill/11-dig double-double in the win. Kevin McKniff (.417) and Jacek Ratajczak (.280) added 11 kills and five blocks apiece. The Matadors are 1/2 match atop the MPSF standings, hosting Long Beach State Thursday and visiting UC San Diego Friday.
USC (5-2 MPSF, 7-3 overall) sophomore Tony Ciarelli had 19 kills, 13 digs, and five blocks in the loss at CSUN. He followed up with 18 kills in a 3-2 win at UCSB. Tri Bourne added a double-double on 13 kills and 15 digs, while Hunter Current and Murphy Troy each had seven blocks. The Trojans, 1/2 match out of first, host Pepperdine Friday.
STANFORD (4-3 MPSF, 5-3 overall) defeated Pacific and UC Santa Cruz at home in four sets. Evan Romero (.359) and Brad Lawson put away 17 kills apiece against the Tigers. Garrett Werner had six blocks and hit .692 on 13 errorless swings. Garrett Dobbs recorded 20 kills with a .607 clip against UCSC. UCLA and UCI visit this weekend.
UC IRVINE (2-6 MPSF, 6-7 overall) upset No. 3 BYU, 3-0, on the second of two nights at home. The Anteaters were on top of the team hitting (.333-.255) and blocking (12.0-6.5), while Jordan DuFault led with 15 kills (.379). In a five-set loss the previous night, Carson Clark tied a career-high 29 kills (.404) with two aces, on his way to 43 kills in the series. Cory Yoder hit .452 on 31 errorless attacks. UCI travels to Pacific and Stanford this weekend.
BYU (5-3 MPSF, 7-4 overall) sophomore Robb Stowell delivered 26 kills (.413) and a pair of aces, while Kevin Sagers added 14 kills (.522) in a 3-2 win on night one at UC Irvine. The Cougars had two separate match points against them in set five. Stowell served three aces and Andrew Stewart had 15 kills (.333) in the loss. BYU is off this week.
PACIFIC (0-7 MPSF, 6-7 overall) picked up two non-conference home wins over Quincy, both in straight sets. Florian Gornik registered 15 kills (.448) in the second win and Jason Borchin had 11 kills (.526) and three aces in the first. Taylor Hughes put away 22 kills (.326) in the MPSF loss. The Tigers host UC Irvine and UCLA this weekend.
UC SAN DIEGO (1-5 MPSF, 4-7 overall) dropped a four-set home match to Long Beach State, as Jason Spangler tallied 19 kills (.441). UCSD defeated Hope International Saturday, 3-0, as Joel Davidson was 15 for 21 without an error (.714). The Tritons stay home this weekend, facing CS Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
UC SANTA BARBARA (4-4 MPSF, 4-7 overall) dropped its fifth and sixth five-set match of the year, hosting Pepperdine and USC this past week. Jeff Menzel recorded 29 kills each night (5.80 K/S) and totaled five aces. Scott Slaughter hit .488 for the week (26-5-43) and Cullen Irons had 21 kills (.319) vs. the Waves. The Gauchos head to Long Beach State and UC San Diego this weekend.
HAWAII (4-4 MPSF, 6-5 overall) dropped a pair of home matches to No. 4 UCLA. Josh Walker had 25 kills (.413) on the second night and Jonas Umlauft tallied a pair of 16-kill matches along with three aces on night two. The Warriors are off this week.
JAYNES AND MUAGUTUTIA MPSF MOLTEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Pepperdine junior middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, CA/Granite Bay HS) played a key role in two road wins, as the Waves erased a 2-0 deficit at No. 9 UCSB before defeating No. 1 Northridge. He totaled 17 blocks for the week (1.89 B/S), 11 at CSUN, while combining for a .567 hitting clip (20-3-30). Jaynes hit better than .500 in each win, averaging 2.22 kills per set, and the 11 blocks at CSUN was his fourth 10-plus block effort of his career.
UCLA senior outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, CA/Francis Parker HS) led a pair of 3-1 road wins at No. 6 Hawaii. He totaled 46 kills (5.75 K/S), hitting .456 (46-10-79), and added six blocks over the two-match series.
