Stanford Wins Invitational; MPSF Win for Cal

STANFORD (7-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won all four games at its own invitational over the weekend, defeating No. 6 Michigan (12-5), No. 2 USC (10-7), No. 7 San Jose State (15-6), and previously unbeaten No. 4 Cal in the title game (10-7). Kelly Eaton and Melissa Seidemann put away four goals apiece in the No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle vs. the Trojans. Seidemann added four vs. the Wolverines and freshman Annika Dries chipped in a hat trick vs. UM and San Jose State. The top-ranked Cardinal hosts Sonoma State Saturday (Feb. 13).
CALIFORNIA (9-1 Overall/1-0 MPSF) won its MPSF opener last Wednesday, 7-4 at home over No. 3 Hawaii. Goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham and the Cal defense held the Wahine scoreless in the first 20 minutes of the game. Peckham finished with 11 saves, allowing only four. Emily Csikos nailed a hat trick in that win, on her way to a 19-goal week in five games, posting a hat trick in each. The Bears went 3-1 at the Stanford Invitational, defeating UCLA (4-3), Arizona State (12-6), and Hawaii (8-7), and will host San Jose State Saturday in MPSF action.
USC (4-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) took third at Stanford with a 13-3 win over UCLA, its largest margin of victory over the Bruins since 1999. Five Trojans' scored twice and Tumua Anae picked up 11 saves in the cage. USC previously defeated Michigan (12-5) and San Jose State (13-6). Nadia Dan scored four goals and Kami Craig added three against SJSU. USC, who also won its 2010 opener at Long Beach State (13-3), hosts Loyola Marymount Saturday.
UCLA (5-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) took fourth at the Stanford Invite, with wins coming against No. 9 Arizona State (7-6) and No. 3 Hawaii (9-8). Grace Reynolds and Leah Trella netted two goals apiece against the Sun Devils. Reynolds totaled five weekend goals. The Bruins host CS Northridge Saturday.
SAN DIEGO STATE (7-2 Overall/0-0 MPSF) came out on top in four of five games this past week, beginning with a rout of Marist (15-5) in the home opener Friday. Ten different players scored, led by Jenna Natalizio's game-high three goals. San Diego State defeated CS Bakersfield (12-3), Redlands (15-3), and defending Big West Champion UC Irvine (10-5) in the UC San Diego Invitational, though a loss to Hartwick (12-11) prevented a weekend title. A pair of road games against the Big West is on tap, at UC Irvine and Long Beach State (Fri-Sat).
HAWAII (5-4 Overall/0-1 MPSF) placed sixth at Stanford, with its win coming against Arizona State (11-7) on day one. Leonie van der Molen tallied four goals in the win and Monika Eggens led with three in the loss to UCLA. The Rainbow Wahine is off until visiting USC Feb. 25, followed by the UC Irvine Invitational, Feb. 27-28.
ARIZONA STATE (4-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won the seventh-place game over San Jose State (11-3) at Stanford, as Lynlee Smith posted a hat trick and Dana Harvey collected 10 saves in goal. Kelsey White recorded a hat trick in the loss to Cal. The Sun Devils are off until the UC Irvine Invitational (Feb. 27-28).
SAN JOSE STATE (7-4 Overall/0-0 MPSF) dropped Stanford Invite games to the host Cardinal (15-6), USC (13-6), Arizona State (11-3), and Michigan (12-6). Dani Curran had a six-goal tournament and Lauren Lewis recorded eight saves against the Sun Devils. The Spartans head to California Saturday for their MPSF opener.
EMILY CSIKOS MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
California sophomore driver Emily Csikos (Calgary, Alberta/Henry Wise Wood) put away 19 goals in five games last week (3.80 GPG), scoring at least three in each. The Bears went 4-1, with two wins over No. 3 Hawaii (including one MPSF), and a win over No. 5 UCLA and No. 9 Arizona State.
ANNIKA DRIES MPSF MIKASA NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Stanford freshman two-meter offense Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS) recorded two hat- tricks as the Cardinal won its own invitational for the first time since 2003. Dries totaled six goals in the tournament, scoring three each in wins over No. 6 Michigan and No. 7 San Jose State.
