MPSF Action Resumes

DENVER (1-0 MPSF, 7-4 overall) received outstanding performances from Ali Flury and Lexi Sanders, recording 2010 MPSF-highs of seven goals and seven assists respectively, in a 17-9 win at George Mason last Friday. The Pioneers scored 49 seconds into the game and led the whole way. Denver was edged 11-10 at Albany Sunday, as Kara Secora led with three goals and three assists and Tulley Stapp added a hat trick. Sanders dished out her nation-leading 29th assist of the year. Next up is a visit to California Friday (Apr. 2) in MPSF action.
UC DAVIS (2-0 MPSF, 7-2 overall) stayed in Pennsylvania last week, following a 21-0 blanking of Liberty on Mar. 22, where it was edged at Lehigh 11-9 and concluded the trip with a 16-5 victory at St. Francis. Hannah Mirza knocked in five goals, while Elizabeth Datino added three along with four assists against the Red Flash. Molly Lapolla, who scored four in the loss, contributed two goals and four assists in the win. Defensively, Molly Peterson caused four turnovers and collected seven ground balls. UC Davis is off until an MPSF visit to Denver on April 9.
CALIFORNIA (0-1 MPSF, 3-6 overall) had seven players score twice Sunday at George Mason, in a 15-11 win over the Patriots. Tara Arolla and Allie Welsh were the point leaders with three apiece, while Alex Tickner added five ground balls and five caused turnovers to her two-goal outing. Cal, who also came within 10-8 at No. 17 William & Mary last Wednesday, hosts Denver Friday (Apr. 2) and Stanford Sunday (Apr. 4).
#12 STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 5-4 overall) had a challenging week by taking on the top-10 back east, defeated by No. 2 Maryland (8-20) Thursday and No. 10 Towson (9-10) Sunday. Julie Christy collected two goals, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers at Towson. She also scored twice at Maryland. The non-conference finale is at home Wednesday (Mar. 31) against Hofstra, before MPSF begins at Fresno State and California this weekend.
OREGON (0-0 MPSF, 4-6 overall) was edged at Delaware last Thursday, 12-11, as Jana Drummond recorded a hat trick and Salliebeth Finnegan collected 10 saves in goal. The Ducks fell at Johns Hopkins Saturday, 20-12. Drummond tallied four more while Catherine Davidson netted a hat trick. Oregon stays east for one more game at Florida Tuesday (Mar. 30), before visiting Fresno State Sunday (Apr. 4) in the MPSF opener.
ST. MARY'S (0-1 MPSF, 3-5 overall) dropped two at home against Cincinnati (12-7) and Drexel (16-8). Amy Daniels scored a hat trick in each game and Mariah Walk had four goals vs. the Bearcats. Juliet Munroe recorded two goals vs. the Dragons. The Gaels travel to Brown Tuesday (Mar. 30) and Fairfield Thursday (Apr. 1).
FRESNO STATE (0-0 MPSF, 0-7 overall) fell 17-3 at home to Cincinnati last Tuesday, as Amanda Cross scored twice and Heather Jack added one goal with three caused turnovers. The entire month of April will played against the MPSF, beginning Friday (Apr. 2) and Sunday (Apr. 4) at home with Stanford and Oregon.
LEXI SANDERS MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Denver senior midfielder Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, CO/Cherry Creek HS) becomes the first repeat winner of this award in 2010, by virtue of tying an all-time program-record seven assists in a 17-9 win at George Mason last Friday, also tops this year in the MPSF. She followed up with two goals and one assist at Albany on Sunday, and now owns a national-high 29 assists on the year. Sanders added three draw controls in each game.
