No. 2 Seed USC Wins Second NCAA Championship

USC (25-3 Overall/6-1 MPSF) held off top seeded Stanford 10-9 in Sunday's NCAA Championship game before a capacity crowd at San Diego State. The Win marked the second NCAA Title for the Trojans, and first since 2004. USC posted a quarterfinal win over No. 7 seed Marist, 20-5, and semifinal win over No. 6 seed Loyola Marymount, 10-6. Senior Kami Craig was named NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player, while goalkeeper Tumua Anae, Kristen Dronberger, and Forel Davies were first-team honorees. Dronberger totaled seven goals in three games.
STANFORD (26-3 Overall/7-0 MPSF) defeated No. 8 seed Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinal, 23-3, and No. 4 seed California, 6-3, in the semifinal before the championship loss. Kelly Eaton scored a game-high four goals in the finals and was named to the all-tournament second team. Melissa Seidemann and Jessica Steffens were first-team honorees, as the former scored twice in the semifinal. Goalkeeper Amber Oland registered 12 saves against Cal to reach the finals. Kim Krueger and Annika Dries were also included on the second-team.
CALIFORNIA (26-9 Overall/4-3 MPSF) took the Bronze in its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance with an 11-7 victory over Loyola Marymount. The Bears ousted Michigan 12-8 in the quarterfinals before the semifinal loss to Stanford. Dana Ocshner tallied a hat trick in the quarterfinal and scored twice in the semifinal. Julie Oreglia also put away three goals vs. the Wolverines. Goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham recorded 11 of her 26 tournament saves in the third-place win over the Lions, while Meghan Corso nailed a hat tick in her final collegiate game.
UCLA (22-8 Overall/4-3 MPSF) won two of three as an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 5 seed Michigan, 9-6, in the fifth-place game. The Bruins routed Marist, 14-3 in Saturday's second round following an upset loss to Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals, 5-4. KK Clark recorded eight goals in three games, including a game-high four against the Red Foxes. Grace Reynolds posted a first quarter hat trick vs. the Wolverines, for three of her six tournament goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement totaled 25 weekend saves (8.33 SPG).
