Hawaii Visits San Jose State in MPSF Opener

SAN JOSE STATE (6-2 Overall/0-0 MPSF) swept through its own invitational this past weekend, with wins over UC Davis (13-9), Santa Clara (10-5), Pacific (10-5), and CS Monterey Bay (14-4). Timi Molnar recorded five goals vs. the Aggies and four vs. the Tigers. Allie Stewart had four vs. the Broncos and Adrianna Vogt nailed a hat trick vs. UOP. Meagan Minson stopped 16 shots in the Davis game. The Spartans host Hawaii in Wednesday's MPSF opener. California, Arizona State, Stanford, and a fourth opponent are also on this weekend's slate at the Stanford Invitational.

CALIFORNIA (7-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) improved to 7-0 with four wins at the San Jose State Invitational. The Bears defeated Pacific (12-6), CS Monterey Bay (18-1), Santa Clara (11-2), and UC Davis (13-5) in the two-day weekend event. Breda Vosters recorded five goals and Lindsay Dorst picked up a career-high 11 saves in the cage in the final game against the Aggies. Vosters finished the weekend with 14 goals. Dana Ochsner tallied a hat trick against the Broncos. Cal takes on San Jose State, Stanford, and Arizona State, plus one other team this weekend in Palo Alto.

SAN DIEGO STATE (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three of four at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational to begin its season. The Aztecs took out Sonoma State (21-3), Concordia (13-5), and the host Gauchos (13-9), while Michigan was the lone loss (11-12). Rachel Miller recorded four goals and Meghann Pederson and Meaghan Poland each recorded hat tricks against Sonoma. Poland, Alex Ford, and Amber Pezzolla scored twice vs. UCSB. SDSU hosts Long Beach State in the home opener Saturday.

STANFORD (4-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) hosts the Stanford Invitational, Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 5-6), meeting Arizona State, San Jose State, California, and a fourth opponent to be determined. The top-ranked Cardinal outscored its four opponents at the Michigan Kick-Off 57-11 to begin the season (Jan. 22-23) in routing Hartwick (14-3), No. 6 Loyola Marymount (14-1), Indiana (14-1), and the host Wolverines (15-6). Pallavi Menon combined for nine tournament goals (2.25 GPG) while Melissa Seidemann added seven.

UCLA (5-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won its home opener last Saturday over Long Beach State, 11-4, as junior KK Clark led the way with a hat trick. The Bruins also turned in a perfect 4-0 Michigan Kick-Off to begin 2011, knocking off Colorado State (15-6), Hartwick (17-3), the host Wolverines (6-5), and CS Northridge (11-5). Clark totaled nine goals, four coming in the Hartwick game. The Bruins meet Hawaii, USC, Indiana, and a fourth team in this weekend's invite.

USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) begins its season at the Stanford Invitational, taking on Indiana, UCLA, Hawaii, and a fourth opponent to be determined. The defending national champions were 25-3 last year and return All-Americans Joelle Bekhazi, Kristen Dronberger, and Patricia Jancso, also the 2010 MPSF Newcomer of the Year.

HAWAII (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season at San Jose State on Feb. 3, also an MPSF contest, before competing in the Stanford Invite. The Rainbow Wahine faces UCLA, Indiana, USC, and a fourth opponent to be announced in Palo Alto. The 2010 MPSF Scoring Leader returns in Monika Eggens (60 goals/2.31 GPG in `10).

ARIZONA STATE (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) is coming off a 16-15 season in 2010, and will first be in action in 2011 at the Stanford Invitational. The Sun Devils meet the host Cardinal, as well as San Jose State, California, and one other opponent over the two days. They return a pair of All-Americans in Lynlee Smith and Sarah Harris.

BREDA VOSTERS MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
California sophomore Breda Vosters (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) paced the Golden Bears at the San Jose State Invitational with 14 goals in four games (3.50 GPG) as Cal outscored its opponents, 54-14. Vosters tied a career-high with five goals in the 18-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, and also tallied five goals in Cal's final tournament victory (13-5) over No. 16-ranked UC Davis.
