UCLA Claims UCSD Invite; Cal Posts MPSF Win

UCLA (12-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) used a 6-3 second half to record a 12-9 championship win over Loyola Marymount at the UC San Diego Invitational. The Bruins also held off San Diego State on Sunday (8-7), following a pair Saturday wins in La Jolla over Santa Clara (11-2) and Hartwick (12-4). Priscilla Orozco combined for seven goals and goalkeeper Sami Hill picked up 13 saves in the semifinal vs. the Aztecs. UCLA hosts UC Irvine Saturday (Feb. 19).

CALIFORNIA (10-2 Overall/1-0 MPSF) used two unanswered fourth quarter goals to seal an 11-7 MPSF opening win over Arizona State Saturday in Berkeley. Elizabeth McLaren recorded a hat trick while Emily Csikos and Ashley Young added two goals apiece. Young has tallied in all 12 games to begin her collegiate career. Stephanie Peckham collected 12 saves in the cage. The Bears return to the pool for another conference game Saturday (Feb. 19).

SAN DIEGO STATE (8-2 Overall/0-0 MPSF) Amber Pezzolla tallied five goals in the 14-12 third place win over Michigan in La Jolla. Leanne Ford recorded a hat trick and Kelly Campoli had 11 saves in the loss to UCLA. The Aztecs picked up Saturday wins over Sonoma State (20-5) and UC Irvine (10-8), and a Friday victory over Marist (14-5). Campoli had 10 saves vs. the Red Foxes. SDSU hosts USC in the conference opener Saturday (Feb. 19).

USC (4-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) routed Cal Baptist, 19-4, in the home opener last Saturday. Madeline Rosenthal led 10 different scorers with four goals. Joelle Bekhazi and Kristen Dronberger were next in line with a hat trick apiece, as the former scored twice in the first four minutes of the game. The Trojans visit Long Beach State Friday (Feb. 18) followed by an MPSF game at San Diego State Saturday (Feb. 19).

ARIZONA STATE (2-4 Overall/1-0 MPSF) Kelsey White poured in a career-high four goals in the 11-7 conference loss at California. Mariam Salloum posted a career-high five goals in a 16-7 Sunday win at CS Monterey Bay. Shannon Haas, Annabelle Carter, and Lynlee Smith all followed with hat tricks. The Sun Devils are off this week, next in action at the UC Irvine Tournament (Feb. 26-27).

STANFORD (8-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off last week. The Cardinal worked three overtimes to seal a 10-9 sudden-victory win over No. 2 USC in the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 6. Freshman Kaley Dodson poured in the tournament-winner with 16 seconds left in the third OT, the last of her five-goal day, including three vs. SJSU. The Cardinal ousted Arizona State (10-1), California (10-5), and San Jose State (16-4) en route to the championship.

HAWAII (3-2 Overall/1-0 MPSF) is off until visiting UCLA Feb. 24 in MPSF action. The Rainbow Wahine claimed their conference opener, 12-9 at San Jose State on Feb. 3, as Leonie Van Der Molen and Monika Eggens each recorded a hat trick. The Rainbow Wahine split their four games at Stanford, with wins coming against Indiana (8-3) and Arizona State (9-7) for fifth place at the invite. Eggens totaled 13 goals in five games during the opening week.

SAN JOSE STATE (7-6 Overall/0-1 MPSF) was off this past week. Last time in the pool, the Spartans won the seventh place game at the Stanford Invite. Dani Curran posted four goals and Meagan Minson tallied nine saves in a 10-6 win over Indiana. Freshman Timi Molnar contributed a 13-goal week, including a career-high six in the MPSF opening loss to Hawaii. She also scored four vs. California. Adriana Vogt recorded a hat trick vs. No. 1 Stanford.

PRISCILLA OROZCO MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCLA senior Priscilla Orozco (Commerce, CA/Montebello HS) scored seven goals as the Bruins won the Triton Invitational title over the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record. Orozco scored in each game, including two goals in wins over Hartwick, San Diego State and Loyola Marymount. She leads UCLA with 26 goals and a 2.00 goals per game average. SAMI HILL MPSF MIKASA NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
UCLA freshman goalkeeper Sami Hill (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos HS) totaled 15 saves in two starts at the Triton Invitational over the weekend, including seven in the Bruins' tournament title victory over Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Hill has collected 48 saves in six games (five starts) this season, posting a 5.71 goals against average in her first season. Nominated: Madeline Rosenthal (USC)
