#5 CALIFORNIA sophomore Donothan Bailey won an all-around and high bar title (15.1) to lift California over then No. 1 Stanford (343.300-339.700) for the second time in 2011. The meet was held at the annual Gold Country Classic in Oakland, CA. The Bears were victorious as a team in four events, including parallel bars, vault, floor, and high bar. Christian Monteclaro claimed the vault title (15.9), while Nic Blair took horse (15.2), and Steve Lacombe rings (15.1). The Bears meet the Cardinal yet again Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Stanford Open, joined by Oklahoma.
#1 OKLAHOMA won a tri-meet last Saturday in Lincoln, NE, defeating the host Huskers and Illinois-Chicago. The Sooners posted a season-high 360.600, sweeping each of the six team events. Steven Legendre claimed three titles on floor (16.200), high bar (15.000), and a program-record vault (16.700), on his way to a first all-around title of 2011 (92.200). Ian Jackson shared a rings title (15.200), while Jake Dalton won p-bars (15.100), as did Alex Naddour on horse (15.400). Oklahoma heads to Stanford for a tri-meet with the Cardinal and California Saturday.
#7 NEBRASKA placed second of three (349.70), ahead of Illinois-Chicago and behind Oklahoma, last Sunday in Lincoln. Freshman Mark Ringle posted career-highs on all four of his events, including floor (14.600), vault (15.500), Parallel bars (14.100), and High Bar (14.400), with the high bar his best finish at fourth. Andreas Hofer was second all-around (85.200), while Anthony Ingrelli shared a rings title with the highest Husker score of the year in that event (15.20). Nebraska faces Iowa Saturday in Iowa City.
#4 STANFORD dropped a dual to California, accumulating 339.700 team points in Oakland. Tim Gentry and Josh Dixon recorded a pair of top-eight finishes at the Las Vegas Winter Cup the week before. Dixon placed sixth all-around (168.800), hitting a second place floor total (15.050, 15.450) and sixth place vault (15.250, 15.600). Gentry came in eighth overall after two days (167.500), finishing second on the rings (14.750, 15.050). John Martin was fifth on horse (13.500, 14.350) while freshman Chris Turner rounded out the top-10 in that event (13.400, 13.300). Stanford hosts California and Oklahoma Saturday (Feb. 19).
#11 AIR FORCE was led by sophomore Troy Brown during prelims at the Winter Cup on Feb. 2, placing third on high bar with a career-high (13.650), and fourth on vault (15.100) and parallel bars (career-high 13.750). Senior Nash Mills turned in a pair of seventh place finishes, scoring a 13.300 on rings and 12.950 on high bar. Sophomore James Okamoto recorded a top-10 finish in his Las Vegas debut, placing ninth on horse (12.200). The Falcons travel to Minnesota Friday (Feb. 18).
