Stanford Takes Down No. 5 Syracuse

#13 STANFORD (1-0 MPSF, 3-0 Overall) has knocked off its second top-10 opponent of the young season, with No. 5 Syracuse being the latest victim on Sunday, 11-10. This outcome comes exactly one week after No. 10 Notre Dame fell to the Cardinal, 13-12. Stanford got off to a 4-1 start in the first 13 minutes and never trailed. Lauren Schmidt dished three assists in that span and added a pair of goals later. Emilie Boeri accumulated two goals and two assists. Stanford, who also won 21-4 over Fresno State, remains home this Sunday (Feb. 27) against Harvard.

CALIFORNIA (2-0 MPSF, 2-1 Overall) received a career-high five points from sophomore Alexa Rozelle off the bench last Saturday, on three goals and two assists, as the Bears picked up another conference win over St. Mary's (14-6). The Bears used a 6-0 run to start the second half. Vail Horn also delivered a hat trick in the pouring rain, while Tara Arolla and Ana Cyr scored twice. Megan Takacs was credited with two assists and Tori Harrison seven groundballs. Cal travels to Longwood and Davidson this weekend.

UC DAVIS (1-1 MPSF, 1-1 Overall) was led by Gina Hoffmire's seven points on five goals and two assists, as the Aggies won their first game against Fresno State at home Saturday, 21-5. Anna Geissbuhler also recorded five goals while Christina Corsa and Hannah Mirza knocked in hat tricks. Vanessa Jamison caused five turnovers and dished a pair of assists. UC Davis hosts St. Mary's in non-conference action Friday (Feb. 25).

OREGON (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) junior Bina Barrett recorded a career-high five goals in the season opener against No. 20 Hofstra, and near upset of the Pride. Jana Drummond added four goals and Hayley Milner chipped in two in the 12-11 overtime defeat. Alex Breiner dished a pair of assists and earned three draw controls. The Ducks stay home this week, hosting Fresno State in their MPSF opener Friday (Feb. 25) and Jacksonville Sunday (Feb. 27).

DENVER (0-0 MPSF, 0-2 Overall) received two goals apiece from Lauren Ciccomascolo and Jenn Etzel in Sunday's 15-7 defeat at No. 17 Florida. Goalkeeper Ashley Harman collected eight saves. Friday at Jacksonville, Kara Secora scored twice and Harman registered seven saves. The Pioneers travel east to No. 20 Hofstra Friday and Stony Brook Sunday.

ST. MARY'S (0-1 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) dropped its 2011 opener at California, 14-6, as Mariah Walk shared a game-high three goals and added an assist. Kathleen Worsdale collected 10 saves in goal. The Gaels compete at UC Davis Friday (Feb. 25), in a non-conference contest.

FRESNO STATE (0-2 MPSF, 0-2 Overall) Amanda Cross put away a pair of goals at No. 13 Stanford last Wednesday and two more at UC Davis Saturday. Rachel Minarovich tallied a hat trick vs. the Aggies. The Bulldogs stay on the road, traveling to Eugene, OR this week, in a conference game at UO Friday and non-conference vs. Jacksonville Saturday.

EMILIE BOERI MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stanford junior attacker Emilie Boeri (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) had five goals and three assists in a win over Fresno State and upset of No. 5 Syracuse. She had a hat trick against the Bulldogs with an assist the 21-4 victory. On Sunday, Boeri played a crucial role in beating Syracuse, a final four squad from a year ago. She posted two goals and two assists, while also contributing a pair of draw controls and forcing a big turnover late in the game.
