MPSF Unbeatens Meet Friday with Stanford at Oregon

OREGON (3-0 MPSF, 6-6 Overall) received hat tricks from Nikki Puszcz, Jess Drummond, Shannon Propst, and Maggie Kovacs, as well as a four-goal effort from Alex Breiner, to earn a wild 16-14 win at California last Friday. Breiner also delivered a trio of assists for a seven point game, as did Bina Barrett in the win that kept Oregon undefeated in the conference. The Ducks, who also scored a 16-10 Sunday win at St. Mary's, host Stanford Friday (Apr. 15) in a battle of MPSF Unbeatens. UC Davis also visits on Sunday (Apr. 17).
#7 STANFORD (4-0 MPSF, 12-1 Overall) won its 22nd straight home game, defeating Denver 16-6 last Friday, as goalkeeper Annie Read collected 12 saves. The Cardinal scored 40 seconds in, led 6-1 at half, and never trailed. Sarah Flynn tallied four goals and one assist, while Karen Nesbitt and Anna Boeri added hat tricks. Anna Kim registered six draw controls and Paige Farmakis caused four turnovers. Stanford plays its final three on the road, beginning Friday (Apr. 15) at Oregon in a battle at the top.
DENVER (3-1 MPSF, 5-10 Overall) had a six-goal and five-assist performance from Kara Secora in a 15-14 overtime thriller at UC Davis this past Sunday. Alex Befus added four goals and one assist, including the game-tying strike and the winning helper to Jenn Etzel with 2:18 to play in the extra session. The 11-point game by Secora was the second most in DU history. Ashley Harman played all 66 minutes in goal with nine saves. The Pioneers, who also won at Fresno State 18-7 Monday, play their final two at home against California (Apr. 16) and Oregon (Apr. 23).
UC DAVIS (2-2 MPSF, 10-3 Overall) Gina Hoffmire was eight for 14 shooting in two conference games last week, combining for eight goals and six draw controls as the Aggies came out on top at St. Mary's (21-12) and were edged at home in overtime to Denver (14-15). UCD trailed 8-5 at the half in Moraga. Elizabeth Datino tallied three goals and two assists in the win, while Laura Martin and Anna Geissbuhler also scored hat tricks. Christina Corsa posted four goals vs. DU. Two remain in the regular season, at Oregon Sunday and at home vs. Stanford on Apr. 20.
CALIFORNIA (3-2 MPSF, 9-6 Overall) split a pair in the MPSF last week, edged at home by Oregon (14-16) before recovering at Fresno State with a 15-2 outcome. Vail Horn led the victory with four goals while Amelia Burke added a hat trick. Alexa Rozelle dished a pair of assists. Megan Takacs and Melissa Humphrey tallied hat tricks in the loss to Oregon, and Tara Arolla knocked in a game-high five goals. One-half game apart in the standings, the Bears travel to Denver for a Saturday (Apr. 16) contest.
ST. MARY'S (1-5 MPSF, 2-10 Overall) came up short to UC Davis (12-21) and Oregon (10-16) last week in a pair of conference home games. Jillian Chong accumulated five points vs. the Aggies on four goals and one assist. Caroline Mahoney added a hat trick. Mariah Walk scored three goals along with an assist vs. the Ducks. The Gaels have completed their MPSF schedule, and travel to Duke, Brown and Marist for the remainder.
FRESNO STATE (0-6 MPSF, 0-12 Overall) dropped home games to California (2-15) and Denver (7-18) in MPSF play, Sunday and Monday, respectively. Freshman Kara Concheck recorded three goals against the Pioneers. The Bulldogs wrap up the season on Apr. 20 at Howard and Apr. 23 at Duquesne.
ALEX BREINER MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Oregon senior midfield Alex Breiner (Alexandria, VA/Bishop O'Connell HS) accounted for over one-third (11 of 32 goals) of the Ducks' scoring in a pair of MPSF road victories. She tallied a career-high seven points in last Friday's 16-14 win at California, finding the back of the net four times and dishing out three assists. Breiner also tied for the team lead with four points in Sunday's 16-10 win at Saint Mary's, netting two goals and two assists.
