Cal Claims First MPSF Championship

CALIFORNIA (24-4 Overall/6-1 MPSF) won its first ever MPSF Title and NCAA Automatic entry with three conference tournament victories this past weekend at San Jose State, capped off with a 7-6 decision over No. 4 seed UCLA in the finals. The Bears led 3-0 in the second quarter Sunday and were never caught. Ashley Young and Elizabeth McLaren scored two goals apiece in the finals. Stephanie Peckham combined for 26 tournament saves.
UCLA (24-6 Overall/4-3 MPSF) was the MPSF Tournament runner-up following wins over USC (12-10) and No. 1 seed Stanford (9-8), and the finals loss to California. The Bruins handed the Cardinal their first loss of the year in the semifinals. Priscilla Orozco accumulated eight tournament goals, four coming in the quarterfinal against USC and three against Stanford. Goalkeeper Caitlin Dement equaled a single-game weekend high 13 saves on day one.
STANFORD (25-1 Overall/7-0 MPSF) had its bid for a perfect season come to an end, but still won a pair over Arizona State (15-6) and San Jose State (15-5). Palavi Menon put away a single-game tournament high six goals in the bronze victory over the Spartans. All-tournament selection Annika Dries posted a hat trick in the first game vs. ASU, while Amber Oland had 10 saves in just two quarters.
SAN JOSE STATE (21-13 Overall/2-5 MPSF) was this year's host of the MPSF Tournament, placing fourth. MPSF scoring leader Adriana Vogt posted a tournament-high 11 goals on the weekend, including five each in the 11-9 upset of No. 3 Hawaii and 13-10 loss to California. Goalkeeper Meagan Minson registered 12 saves in the opening day win over UH, on her way to a tournament-high 30. Timi Molnar added a hat trick vs. Cal.
USC (18-6 Overall/4-3 MPSF) won two of three and finished fifth, taking wins over Arizona State (10-9) and Hawaii (8-7). The Trojans came back from four down after one quarter against the Sun Devils. Kristen Dronberger netted a hat trick in that game, including the game-winner in the fourth. Patricia Jancso totaled eight goals in three games. All-tournament selection Joelle Bekhazi scored five in Friday's loss to UCLA and a hat trick in the fifth-place win over UH.
HAWAII (18-9 Overall/4-3 MPSF) Leonie Van Der Molen accumulated nine tournament goals, including a game-high four in the fifth-place loss to USC. The Rainbow Wahine earned a 14-10 Saturday win over San Diego State, as Monika Eggens and Amarens Genee poured in a hat trick, and goalkeeper Sara Gralitzer stopped 13 shots. Eggens was an all-tournament honoree.
ARIZONA STATE (12-14 Overall/0-7 MPSF) won the seventh-place game over San Diego State, 11-9, in a game the Sun Devils did not trail. Lynlee Smith scored four goals and Ianeta Hutchinson picked up 11 saves in the cage. Smith had a nine-goal weekend. Sarah Harris tallied four on day two vs. USC and a pair against the Aztecs.
SAN DIEGO STATE (20-15 Overall/1-6 MPSF) took eighth after losses to California, Hawaii, and Arizona State, finishing its 20-win season. Meaghan Poland recorded five goals in the seventh-place game vs. ASU. Sarah Brady posted a hat trick vs. UH and goalkeeper Kelly Campoli picked up 10 saves in the opener vs. Cal.
