SDSU Earns First-Ever Victory

SAN DIEGO STATE (0-1 MPSF, 1-2 Overall) picked up its first-ever win in just the second game in program history, 14-9 at home over Cincinnati last Friday. SDSU used a 9-4 second half for the win. Bailey Ewing and Sophie Koubek put away four goals apiece. Koubek led the team in points (6) and goals (6), with a .750 shot percentage (6 for 8) through the week, ending with the UC Davis game. The Aztecs are off this week.

CALIFORNIA (1-0 MPSF, 1-0 Overall) opened the Ginger Miles era with an 18-6 victory at St. Mary's this past Sunday in an MPSF game. Junior Melissa Humphrey posted nine points to tie a Golden Bear single-game record and dished six assists to set a new single-game record. Alexa Rozelle scored a game and career-high six goals, the most by a Bear since 2009. Cal's home opener is Thursday (Feb. 23) against No. 9 James Madison.

UC DAVIS (1-0 MPSF, 1-0 Overall) won its season opener in a conference game, 18-7 at San Diego State on Sunday, as the Aggies never trailed. Junior Elizabeth Datino tallied four goals and two assists while Hannah Mirza added a hat trick. Freshman midfield Elizabeth Landry earned seven of the team's 16 draw controls. UC Davis plays another conference road game Thursday, visiting St. Mary's.

OREGON (0-0 MPSF, 1-1 Overall) split a pair of road games to open the 2012 campaign, narrowly edged at Temple (14-12) before getting in the win column at La Salle Sunday (10-6). Kristina Barrett knocked in game-highs of four goals and two assists in the win. Jess Drummond scored four goals and Shannon Propst added a hat trick in the Temple game. The Ducks finish the road trip at Towson Tuesday (Feb. 21), before hosting California Sunday (Feb. 26).

#6 STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 0-3 Overall) faced its third ranked opponent to start the season, coming up short at No. 20 Notre Dame Sunday, 17-14. Emily Boeri completed a hat trick, while goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz tallied a career-high 17 saves. The Cardinal continues with their rigorous schedule on Saturday (Feb. 25), hosting No. 9 James Madison.

ST. MARY'S (0-1 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) began competition at the new St. Mary's Recreation Field on Sunday in a conference game with California. Jaclyn Biggers and Amanda Cross each scored twice for the Gaels. SMC remains home this week in another MPSF contest, taking on UC Davis Thursday.

FRESNO STATE (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) sophomore midfield Kara Concheck scored four goals against Cincinnati on Sunday in San Diego, a 17-12 Bearcat win. Marcy Levatino and Margaret Wolford scored two apiece. Concheck added one assist and one ground ball and Katie Wilbur collected 14 saves in goal. The Bulldogs are off until the home opener on Mar. 14 against New Hampshire.

DENVER (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) begins its season at Johns Hopkins Friday (Feb. 24). Two-time all-conference Ashley Harman and Kara Secora highlight the returnees from last year's second-place finish, as the former was third in the MPSF last year in save percentage (.422) and the latter leading in assists (2.06 A/G) and third in points per game (4.33).

California junior midfielder Melissa Humphrey (Coronado, CA/Coronado HS) led all scorers with a school-record tying nine points in an 18-6 win at St. Mary's in both teams' season opener on Feb. 19. Humphrey tallied a school-record and game-high six assists and added three goals and three ground balls for the Golden Bears.
