STANFORD (6-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) claimed its own invitational for the third consecutive year, defeating UC Davis (18-6), USC (8-7), San Jose State (11-6), and UCLA in the finals (9-5). Goalkeeper Kate Baldoni collected 15 of her 23 Sunday saves in the championship game, in addition to stopping 10 shots vs. USC Saturday. Ashley Grossman scored a hat trick vs. the Spartans. The Cardinal MPSF opener is Saturday (Feb. 11) at San Jose State.
UCLA (6-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was the Stanford Invitational runner-up following wins over Hawaii (6-5), No. 2 California (4-3) and Michigan (10-3). The Bruins scored twice in the fourth for the comeback over UH. Caitlin Dement stopped nine shots in the win over Cal. KK Clark totaled eight goals in four tournament games, extending her scoring streak to seven and her season total to 18 goals (2.57 GPG). The home opener is Saturday against Cal Baptist.
USC (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three of four to place third at Stanford, defeating San Jose State (14-6), UC Davis (13-6), and No. 2 California (10-5). Kaleigh Gilchrist put away seven goals in the four games, including a career-high three against the Bears. Monica Vavic tallied four of her five goals on day two. The Trojans are off this week, next competing at the Cal Baptist Tournament (Feb. 17-18).
CALIFORNIA (11-2 Overall/1-0 MPSF) is in the conference win column after an 8-5 outcome over Hawaii last Thursday at home. The Bears also defeated the Rainbow Wahine (8-4) and Michigan (9-7) at Stanford, en route to a fourth place finish in the invitational. Breda Vosters had a nine-goal tournament, following a three-goal MPSF opener. Cal is off this week, in preparation for an MPSF home game vs. San Jose State, Feb. 18.
HAWAII (2-3 Overall/0-1 MPSF) placed fifth at the Stanford Invitational with wins over Michigan (7-5) and San Jose State (11-7), following a conference loss at California. The Rainbow Wahine received four goals apiece from Amarens Genee and Emily Scott in the placement victory over the Spartans. Scott combined for an eight-goal week in her first five games at UH. Hawaii is off until it travels to USC in MPSF play on Feb. 23.
ARIZONA STATE (8-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) is off to its best start in the 11-year history of the program after taking a second straight tournament title, defeating CS Northridge (10-5), CS San Bernardino (21-2), and CSU Bakersfield (14-7) last Saturday in Riverside, CA. Ianeta Hutchinson had a career-weekend in the cage with 30 total saves, while Anna Kertes combined for seven goals. The Sun Devils play in the UCSD Invite Saturday (Feb. 11).
SAN DIEGO STATE (4-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) outlasted Long Beach State in its lone game last week, 13-12. Meaghan Poland poured in a game-high five goals, while Anique Hermann added a hat trick. Goalkeeper Kelly Campoli picked up 12 saves. The Aztecs host Hartwick Thursday (Feb. 9), before competing twice in the UC San Diego Invitational Saturday (Feb. 11).
SAN JOSE STATE (6-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) finished sixth at Stanford, claiming a 13-12 decision over UC Davis in its second game of the weekend. Dani Curran and Katie Buzzetta each posted a hat trick in the win. Elise Fullerton scored twice. The Spartans' MPSF opener is at home Saturday (Feb. 11) against top-ranked Stanford.
KATE BALDONI KAP 7 MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stanford junior goalkeeper Kate Baldoni (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS) recorded 15 saves in the 9-5 Stanford Invitational Championship over No. 4 UCLA Sunday. Baldoni started all four contests in the two-day event, combining for 36 saves (9.00 SPG), which also included a 10-save game against No. 3 USC in the 8-7 win.
