UCLA 4-0 in MPSF; USC Visits ASU

MPSF Women's Water Polo Weekly Release - 3/19/12

UCLA (15-1 Overall/4-0 MPSF) extended its win streak to nine games thanks to a strong second-half against another previous MPSF-unbeaten, Arizona State. The Bruins used a 4-1 second-half to win 8-6 at home last Saturday. KK Clark delivered a team-high three goals, while Emily Greenwood added two, including the game-winner. Caitlin Dement was credited with seven saves in goal. UCLA is off this week, next in action at Hawaii on Mar. 31.

ARIZONA STATE (18-3 Overall/2-1 MPSF) had a three-game win streak snapped at No. 1 UCLA last Saturday, 8-6, as Alicia Brightwell scored a game-high four goals. Sunday, ASU swept a doubleheader in Pomona, routing Iona (16-3) and Pomona (21-6). Brightwell and Mariam Salloum each totaled six goals on the day, and Petra Pardi became the first ASU freshman to net five goals in a game twice in one year. ASU has another doubleheader Tuesday, taking on Princeton and Azusa Pacific in Walnut, CA, before hosting USC Saturday (Mar. 24) in a battle of 2-1 conference teams.

SAN DIEGO STATE (16-6 Overall/1-3 MPSF) won five straight home games last week, defeating Hawaii (8-4) in an MPSF contest, followed by Indiana (7-2), Bucknell (11-5), CS Northridge (10-6), and Princeton (9-7) in the Aztec Invitational. Amber Pezzolla accumulated nine goals over the five wins. Kelly Campoli totaled 55 saves in the cage (11.00 SPG). The Aztecs host a doubleheader Saturday vs. California, also an MPSF game, followed by Occidental.

HAWAII (7-9 Overall/0-4 MPSF) won three of five at the San Diego State Invitational last week. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Indiana (11-9), Bucknell (9-7), and UC San Diego (11-9). Amarens Genee lit up the scoreboard with 15 weekend goals, including six against the Tritons, five vs. the Hoosiers, and three vs. the Bison. Emily Scott also had three of her seven tourney goals in the Bucknell win. UH hosts San Jose State Saturday in a conference game.

USC (12-3 Overall/2-1 MPSF) is back in action Thursday (Mar. 22) when Long Beach State visits, followed by MPSF action at ASU Saturday. The Trojans picked up their second conference win on Mar. 9, 13-5 at home over No. 6 San Diego State. USC scored seven straight goals from early in the second quarter until late in the third, opening up a 3-2 game. Four players scored twice, including Colleen O'Donnell, Constance Hiller, Kaleigh Gilchrist, and Monica Vavic.

STANFORD (14-1 Overall/2-0 MPSF) broke open a 4-3 halftime edge at Hawaii on Mar. 10, into a 12-4 final outcome to move to 2-0 in conference play. Kiley Neushul posted a hat trick, a game-high, while Cassie Churnside and Pallavi Menon each scored a pair of second-half goals to lead the 8-1 run. Stanford is next in the water on Mar. 25 & 26 at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, facing Brown and UCSB.

SAN JOSE STATE (12-8 Overall/0-3 MPSF) was off last week, and returns to action at Hawaii Saturday (Mar. 24) as MPSF continues. The Spartans came within 4:25 of one of their biggest wins in program history, taking No. 1 UCLA the distance on Mar. 10. Anna Natalizio recorded a hat trick, including a goal that put the Spartans ahead halfway through the fourth quarter. Meagan Minson stopped eight shots in the cage.

CALIFORNIA (15-5 Overall/2-1 MPSF) was off last week, next competing Saturday at San Diego State in an MPSF game. The Bears came up short at No. 5 Arizona State, 10-7, on Mar. 10, as Breda Vosters attempted to rally the team back in the fourth quarter with three goals in the final six minutes. Lindsay Dorst had seven saves in goal.

KELLY CAMPOLI KAP 7 MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Diego State senior goalkeeper Kelly Campoli (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro HS) totaled 55 saves in the cage (11.00 SPG) in a 5-0 Aztec Invitational. She was part of defense that allowed just 4.80 goals per game over the five wins. Of her 56 stops, 17 came against No. 11 Indiana, while limiting the Hoosiers to a season-low two goals. Campoli also posted double-figure saves against Princeton (12) and Hawaii (10), and accumulated six assists and five steals.

EMILY SCOTT KAP 7 MPSF NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Hawaii sophomore Emily Scott (Sydney, Australia/Wenona) tallied seven goals at the San Diego State Invitational, including a hat trick to lead the Rainbow Wahine in their rebound win over Bucknell on Saturday. She also scored two goals in the win over No. 11 Indiana, and two against Wagner. This is Scott's second MPSF honor. (Feb. 6).
