Walsh Lifts Aztecs to Another Early Season Win

MPSF Women's Lacrosse Weekly Release - 3/5/12

SAN DIEGO STATE (0-1 MPSF, 2-2 Overall) Meris Walsh scored a program-high seven goals in an 11-10 non-conference home win over St. Mary's last Friday. The seven goals ties for the most by an MPSF player since the '09 season. Walsh put away four in a row in the first-half, spanning from 10:59-4:40 on the clock. Sammy Slattery picked up 13 saves in goal. SDSU hosts Detroit Tuesday (Mar. 6), followed by a conference home game with Cal Saturday.

# 16 STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 1-4 Overall) competed against its fifth straight ranked opponent to begin the season, though fell short this past Saturday at home to No. 9 Vanderbilt, 16-11. The Cardinal managed to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Emilie Boeri shared a game-high four points on a pair of goals and assists. Catherine Swanson, Kyle Fraser, and Emily Newstrom also scored twice. New Hampshire visits Stanford Sunday (Mar. 11).

UC DAVIS (2-0 MPSF, 2-3 Overall) came up short in three games on the east coast last week, against High Point (22-14), Davidson (15-10), and Virginia Tech (18-14). Elizabeth Datino recorded five goals vs. High Point, two vs. Davidson, and a first-half hat trick vs. VT. Anna Geissbuhler scored four vs. the Hokies and Annie Lehner put in her first collegiate hat trick vs. Davidson. UCD hosts Long Island Sunday (Mar. 11) in the team's only game this week.

OREGON (1-0 MPSF, 2-3 Overall) battled the top-ranked team in the country for only the second time in program history, a 15-2 loss at No.1 Northwestern on Saturday. Shannon Propst and Jess Drummond were the goal scorers for the Ducks, the team-leading ninth for the former. Old Dominion visits Eugene Saturday (Mar. 10).

ST. MARY'S (0-3 MPSF, 1-3 Overall) Juliet Munroe and Jaclyn Biggers punched in hat tricks on Sunday as the Gaels recorded their first win, 11-10 over Detroit in San Diego. Krista Morgan dished a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Kathleen Worsdale collected 12 saves. Amanda Cross picked up a pair of goals, assists, draw controls, and caused turnovers in the SDSU game. The Gaels play three in Denver this week, including an MPSF game with DU Friday.

CALIFORNIA (1-1 MPSF, 1-2 Overall) played No. 9 James Madison evenly through 48 minutes last Thursday, though the Dukes got the final four goals for the 13-9 outcome. Megan McGinnis recorded 13 saves in goal for the Bears. Megan Takacs put away five goals in the Oregon game. Idle last week, California takes on Detroit and San Diego State in San Diego Thursday and Saturday (Mar. 8 & 10).

DENVER (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) had its game at Louisville this past Friday canceled due to poor weather. The Pioneers dropped a 20-5 outcome at Johns Hopkins in their opener on Feb. 24. Kara Secora recorded one goal and one assist, and Rachael Dillon scored her first career goal. Denver's home opener is Friday (Mar. 9) against St. Mary's, also a conference game.

FRESNO STATE (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) sophomore midfield Kara Concheck scored four goals against Cincinnati on Feb. 19 in San Diego, a 17-12 Bearcat win. Marcy Levatino and Margaret Wolford scored two apiece. Concheck added one assist and one ground ball and Katie Wilbur collected 14 saves in goal. The Bulldogs are off until the home opener on Mar. 14 against New Hampshire.
