Denver Wins Eighth Straight; Takacs Atop NCAA

MPSF Women's Lacrosse Weekly Release - 4/2/12

DENVER (1-0 MPSF, 8-1 Overall) outlasted Delaware and Drexel at home last week to extend the win streak to eight. Jenn Etzel kept on rolling with four goals, including a second-half hat trick in a tight game with the Dragons. Kara Secora also put away three in that win. Melissa Maier had a combined four goals, three assists and nine draw controls over the two wins. The Pioneers host seven-time defending MPSF Champion Stanford Saturday (Apr. 7).

CALIFORNIA (2-2 MPSF, 5-5 Overall) split two on the road, bouncing back from the 15-5 loss at Navy to defeat Villanova last Friday, 10-6. Megan Takacs and Vail Horn each scored a game-high three goals, while Paige Gasparino scored two goals and one assist. Melissa Humphrey tallied three assists. Takacs enters the week tied for the NCAA Division I lead with four goals per contest, as the Bears visit UC Davis in conference action Wednesday (Apr. 4).

OREGON (2-0 MPSF, 7-4 Overall) Shannon Propst delivered three goals and two assists last Tuesday at Davidson, as the Ducks raced out to a 6-0 halftime lead on their way to an 8-4 win. The Ducks came back on Sunday and slammed in 20 goals, the most since the 2010 season opener, in a 20-10 rout over Cincinnati. Nikki Puszcz tallied a career-high five goals and UO caused a season-high 20 turnovers. Fresno State and UC Davis visit this week in MPSF action.

UC DAVIS (2-0 MPSF, 5-5 Overall) Elizabeth Datino, who entered last week with the top Division I points-per-game average, had four goals and three assists for seven points at Vermont. Elizabeth Landry added four goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a game-high seven draw controls, while Jordan Majka recorded a season-high 14 saves. Datino had a three-goal, three-assist game in the 11-7 win at Bryant. UCD hosts Cal Wednesday (Apr. 4).

SAN DIEGO STATE (1-3 MPSF, 3-8 Overall) was edged in a pair of tight games back east, 17-14 at Lafayette and 16-15 in overtime at St. Francis (PA). Meris Walsh (4 goals, 1 assist) and Bailey Ewing (3 goals, 2 assists) led SDSU against the Leopards. The same duo led in Loretto, as Ewing scored four and Walsh three. Lauren Maack dished three assists. SDSU visits Regis in Colorado Saturday (Apr. 7), followed by Denver Monday (Apr. 9).

STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 2-7 Overall) fell 10-4 at Harvard and 11-9 at Albany last week. Emilie Boeri recorded four goals, while Emily Newstrom added three in Albany. Boeri scored twice against the Crimson. The Cardinal has seven games remaining in the regular season, all in the MPSF, beginning Tuesday (Apr. 3) at Fresno State and Saturday (Apr. 7) at Denver.

FRESNO STATE (0-1 MPSF, 2-5 Overall) dropped a pair of road games at Jacksonville and No. 4 Florida, as Margaret Wolford and Natalie Harrington each scored against JU. The Bulldogs host Stanford Tuesday (Apr. 3), followed by a visit to Oregon Friday (Apr. 6).

ST. MARY'S (0-3 MPSF, 2-8 Overall) is off until April 13. Last time out on Mar. 24, the Gaels rallied from an 8-2 second half deficit, though had its comeback fall short in a 10-8 defeat to Central Connecticut State. Caroline Mahoney scored a hat trick, followed by two goals from Allie DeBruhl. Rachel Minarovich tallied a line of one goal, two assists, three caused turnovers, four ground balls, and six draw controls.

SHANNON PROPST MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Oregon sophomore midfield Shannon Propst (Bel Air, MD/Fallston HS) compiled six goals and four assists in two victories against Davidson, 8-4, and Cincinnati, 20-10. In both games, Propst matched her career-high of three goals for the third time this season and fifth time for her career. The 20 team goals scored against the Bearcats were the most for the Ducks in over two years.
