UCLA, SJSU Successful in Michigan

UCLA (4-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) took out San Diego State (12-8), Michigan (12-3), Colorado State (14-6), and Indiana (8-4) to kick-off its season at the Michigan Invitational. Emily Donohoe scored four of her 14 weekend goals in a comeback win over the Hoosiers, while newcomer Rachel Fattal scored three of her six in the opener against the Aztecs. Sami Hill had 12 saves vs. Indiana. The Bruins head to the UCSB Invitational this weekend, facing Pacific, Concordia, Claremont M-S, and the host UCSB.
SAN JOSE STATE (3-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three of four in Michigan, defeating Indiana (12-10), Colorado State (16-8), and the host Wolverines (9-6). Anna Natalizio combined for 12 goals, third-highest amongst all tournament players, while freshman Rae Lekness began her career with 11 goals, including tying the all-time SJSU freshman record with six in a game, vs. Michigan. The Spartans' home opener is Saturday as they face Michigan for the second time.
CALIFORNIA (1-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) kicked off its season with a fairly comfortable game at Pacific, 14-4.The Bears went on an 8-1 run in the final two-plus periods to seal their first win. Tiera Schroeder netted the game's lone hat trick. Cal hosts Michigan Saturday (Jan. 26).
CSU BAKERSFIELD (0-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) began its first season in the MPSF, hosting a non-conference game last Friday against UC Santa Barbara. Jessica Browning, the Roadrunners' leading scorer and All-WWPA performer a year ago, poured in a career-high five goals. Each of the five were scored in the second-half. CSUB takes on Concordia, UC Irvine, Stanford, and Pacific this weekend at the UCSB Invitational.
STANFORD (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season Friday (Jan. 15) at home against Michigan, before its four-game weekend at the UCSB Invitational. The Cardinal have won the last two NCAA Championships and are the unanimous favorites to win the conference this year.
ARIZONA STATE (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) plays six games to start its season this weekend in Santa Barbara, facing Cal Baptist, LMU, CS Northridge, UCSB, UC Irvine, and Concordia. The Sun Devils are coming off a 25-win season.
USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season at the UC San Diego Invitational, Feb. 9-10. The Trojans tied for second in the MPSF last year and finished second nationally.
EMILY DONOHOE KAP 7 MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCLA sophomore Emily Donohoe (Upland, CA/St. Lucy's HS) scored a total of 14 goals (3.5 GPG) in the Bruins' 4-0 Michigan Invitational. She opened the year with three goals in a 12-8 win over No. 7 San Diego State. Then she single-handedly outscored No. 11 Michigan with four goals in a 12-3 win over the Wolverines. Sunday, Donohoe scored three goals in the 14-6 win over Colorado State and concluded the day with four more in the 8-4 win over No. 14 Indiana. RAE LEKNESS KAP 7 MPSF NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
San Jose State freshman Rae Lekness (Calgary, Alberta/National Sport School) tied the single-game freshman school record for most goals with six in the 9-6 win over No. 11 Michigan. She put away San Jose State's last six goals including a hat trick in the fourth quarter in that win, and totaled 11 goals in the Spartans' 3-1 tournament. Also Nominated: Rachel Fattal (UCLA)...
