Arizona State and Stanford Unbeaten to Kick-off Season

ARIZONA STATE (6-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) kicked off its season with six wins at the UCSB Invitational, taking out Cal Baptist (14-7), LMU (11-7), CS Northridge (12-6), UCSB (10-7), UC Irvine (5-4), and Concordia (15-5). Alicia Brightwell combined for 17 goals, six vs. CSUN, the second most in single-game Sun Devil history. Freshman goalkeeper E.B. Keeve combined for 66 saves (11.00 S/G), playing every minute of every game, highlighted by 12 vs. No. 6 UCI.

STANFORD (5-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opened its season with five wins, defeating Michigan (11-2) at home, followed by UCSB Invitational wins over UC Irvine (9-4), Cal Baptist (19-1), CSU Bakersfield (20-3), and Loyola Marymount (14-8). Melissa Seidemann and Kaley Dodson each had hat ricks vs. the Lions, while the former also scored three vs. CSUB and UCI. Gabby Stone made her collegiate debut in goal vs. CSUB, collecting eight saves. Stanford hosts an invitational this weekend (Feb. 2-3), facing San Jose State, UC Davis, and an opponent to be determined.

UCLA (8-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won all four games at UCSB this past weekend, defeating Concordia (16-4), Pacific (11-5), Claremont MS (15-3) and the host Gauchos (10-2). Kodi Hill had a hat trick vs. the Eagles, as did India Forster and Alexa Tielmann vs. UCSB. Sami Hill collected eight saves, allowing just two goals vs. the hosts. The Bruins meet Hawaii, California, Indiana, and a fourth opponent at this weekend's Stanford Invitational.

SAN JOSE STATE (4-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) defeated Michigan for the second time in the young season, 9-4 at home last Saturday. Freshman Rae Lekness poured in a game-high five goals, giving her 16 total on the year, while Timi Molnar added three. Maddie Reardon collected nine saves. The Spartans take on UC Davis, Hartwick, the host Stanford, and a fourth opponent this weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

CALIFORNIA (2-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) doubled-up on Michigan this past Saturday in the home opener in Berkeley, 14-7. Ashley Young and Breda Vosters scored three goals apiece and Savanna Smith collected 16 saves in the cage. The Bears take on Indiana, UCLA, Hawaii, and a fourth opponent at this weekend's Stanford Invitational.

CSU BAKERSFIELD (1-4 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won its first game with an 11-10 outcome over Concordia this past Saturday at the UCSB Invitational. Paige Tsuruda, Nicola Barrett, and Niki DeLeon scored two goals each in the win, while Alex Bayer recorded 10 saves in goal. The Roadrunners compete at Cal Baptist Saturday (Feb. 2) vs. UC Irvine and San Diego State.

USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season at the UC San Diego Invitational, Feb. 9-10. The Trojans tied for second in the MPSF last year and finished second nationally.

ALICIA BRIGHTWELL KAP 7 MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Arizona State senior Alicia Brightwell (Sydney, Australia/University of Sydney) totaled 17 goals in leading the Sun Devils to a 6-0 start at the UCSB Invitational. She had six goals (second-most in ASU history) in a 12-6 victory over #17 CS Northridge, four against #15 UCSB in a 10-7 decision and five in an 11-7 victory over #8 Loyola Marymount. Having now competed in just one full season and six games, Brightwell already finds herself 10th on ASU's all-time goals scored list with 92....Also Nominated: Shannon McKenzie (CSUB); Maddie Reardon (SJSU); Melissa Seidemann (STAN); Savanna Smith (CAL); Alexa Tielmann (UCLA)...

E.B. KEEVE KAP 7 MPSF NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK

Arizona State freshman E.B. Keeve (Naperville, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) made her collegiate debut at the UCSB Invite, logging a 6-0 record over the course of the event. Keeve played every minute of every game as ASU knocked off ranked teams in #6 UC Irvine, #8 LMU, #15 UCSB, #17 CSUN and #18 Cal Baptist...Keeve had five games with double digit saves on her way to 66 total saves (11 saves per game). She had a 6.00 goals-against average and was nearly unbeatable as she allowed only four against the #6 Anteaters while posting 12 saves in the contest....Also Nominated: Alexa Tielmann (UCLA); Rae Lekness (SJSU); Anna Yelizarova (STAN)..
