SOONERS ROLL IN FORT WORTH
#3 OKLAHOMA knocked off No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Illinois, and No. 8 Iowa at the inaugural Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, TX last Friday. The Sooners accumulated a 441.500 total, over 12 points better than second-place OSU. The Sooners won team event titles on horse (72.850), parallel bars (72.850) and high bar (73.000).The two individual champions were Presten Ellsworth on vault (15.100) and Danny Beredini on p-bars (15.250). Oklahoma meets Iowa again this week, traveling to Iowa City for a Saturday (Feb. 2) dual.
#2 STANFORD came up short at No. 3 Michigan last Saturday, 439.750-429.350. The Cardinal were highlighted on still rings, as James Fosco and Jordan Nolff scored 15.200 and 15.100, good for first and second-place finishes, respectively. The rings were the lone event Stanford came on top, 73.700-73.550. Stanford does not compete as a team for four weeks, as select gymnasts will head to Las Vegas, NV, Feb. 7-9, to compete in the annual Winter Cup.
#6 AIR FORCE Tyler Huebner and Nick Owen earned third-place finishes on rings (season-best 14.850) and horse (14.000), respectively, in a dual loss at Minnesota last Saturday. Josh Ramos also delivered a third-place score of 14.300 on the parallel bars, as did Tory Brown on vault (14.650). The Falcons take on Washington's club team Friday (Feb. 1) in Seattle.
#5 CALIFORNIA Kyle Zemeir and Kevin Wolting tied for second all-around (84.050), as the Bears placed third (425.900) of four at the Stanford Open two weekends ago. Zemeir was high bar champion (15.000), while Jeffrey Langenstein posted the floor title (15.650), as did Matthew Del Junco on horse (14.950), and Steven Lacombe on rings (15.500). The Bears travel to Michigan Saturday.
JACOBY RUBIN MPSF GYMNAST OF THE WEEK
Oklahoma sophomore Jacoby Rubin (Buffalo Grove, IL) led the win against three top-eight teams. Rubin posted a 15.000 on high bar, 14.800 (tied career-high) on horse, scored a career-high 15.050 on rings, and recorded a 13.950 on parallel bars. His high bar and parallel bar routines marked his season debuts in those events. Behind Rubin's efforts, OU won the pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar events at the six-team meet.
