MPSF Heads To UC Irvine Invitational

USC (8-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) extended its season-opening win streak to eight games with a Cal Baptist Invitational sweep over Long Beach State (9-1), Azusa Pacific (29-4), Concordia (24-6), and the host CBU (22-3). Monica Vavic combined for 16 goals, led by five in the game vs. the 49ers, upping her total to a conference-tying best 30 (3.75 GPG). Goalkeeper Flora Bolonyai carries a 3.11 goals-against average, also tops in the MPSF.

UCLA (13-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) ran off the final three goals against No. 6 UC Irvine last Friday for a 9-6 win. The Bruins open their UCI Tournament weekend against UC San Diego. Emily Donohoe is tied for the conference-high 30 goals on the year.

CSU BAKERSFIELD (4-9 Overall/0-0 MPSF) split two games at UC Davis, defeating Cal Lutheran, 16-10, before falling to the host Aggies, 12-7. The Roadrunners open their UCI Tournament with top-ranked Stanford. Freshman Nicola Barrett has put away a team-high 19 goals through 13 games (1.46 GPG).

STANFORD (9-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) is coming off a bye week, last competing at UC Davis on Feb. 9, a 15-4 win. Stanford opens the UCI Tournament against CSU Bakersfield. Melissa Seidemann has 25 goals (2.78 GPG), followed by Anna Yelizarova with 24 (2.67 GPG), second and fourth respectively in the conference.

CALIFORNIA (9-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off last week, last in action sweeping through the Princeton Invitational (Feb. 8-9). The Bears face Loyola Marymount in their first of four UCI Tournament games. Tiera Schroeder and Emily Csikos are the leading scorers with 20 apiece (2.00 GPG).

ARIZONA STATE (9-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) last competed as it placed second at the UC San Diego Invitational, including a thrilling win over No. 6 UC Irvine (7-6) in sudden-victory overtime. The Sun Devils open the UCI Tournament with CS Northridge. Alicia Brightwell owns 25 goals (2.78 GPG) and goalkeeper E.B. Keeve is already a two-time newcomer of the week.

SAN JOSE STATE (6-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off last week and competes at the UC Irvine Tournament, first meeting Hawaii. Freshman Rae Lekness has a team-high 21 goals and ranks fifth in the MPSF with 2.33 GPG.

MONICA VAVIC MPSF KAP 7 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

USC sophomore Monica Vavic (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Palos Verdes HS) repeats the weekly honor by accumulating 16 goals in four games, including five against No. 11 Long Beach State, as the Trojans won the Cal Baptist Invitational. Vavic added seven assists and drew four ejections during the invitational. She leads the MPSF with 30 goals and a 3.75 goals per game average.

NICOLA BARRETT MPSF KAP 7 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK

CSU Bakersfield freshman Nicola Barrett (Cape Town, South Africa/Rustenburg HS) tied the Roadrunner season-high with five goals in the 16-10 victory over Cal Lutheran. She added an assist, a steal, and drew one ejection against the Regals, who are ranked fifth in Division III. In the 12-7 loss to No. 14 UC Davis, Barrett posted a hat trick, added an assist, and drew three ejections.
