USC Gets First Win; Denver Delivers Late in Opener

USC (0-0 MPSF, 1-2 Overall) picked up its first win in program history, in its third-ever game, 24-4 at home over Presbyterian this past Friday. The Trojan Lacrosse program was underway in a Feb. 9 home game against No. 1 Northwestern. Amanda Johansen and Caroline Cordrey scored four goals each in the win. Johansen scored a hat trick over an 8-0 first half run which would prove more than enough to put the game away. USC hosts its MPSF opener against St. Mary's Sunday (Feb. 24).

DENVER (0-0 MPSF, 1-0 Overall) led for a grand total of six seconds in its season opener at Vanderbilt last Saturday, still good enough for the victory, as Jenn Etzel delivered the winner on Jill Remenapp's fifth assist. Remenapp also scored twice for a seven-point opener, while Kara Secora scored a hat trick. The Pioneers head to George Washington and Delaware this weekend.

FRESNO STATE (0-0 MPSF, 1-0 Overall) won a neutral site game over Presbyterian to begin the season, 17-14, played at USC. Marcy Levatino came off the bench with a school record seven goals (two shy of the MPSF record), along with two caused turnovers, five ground balls, and eight draw controls. The Bulldogs are off until March 5.

SAN DIEGO STATE (0-0 MPSF, 1-1 Overall) routed Stetson on the road this past Sunday in game two, 18-1. Eleven Aztecs' scored, led by Michaela Jarvis and Katie Gill each with a hat trick. SDSU hosts St. Mary's Friday in an MPSF contest.

STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 0-1 Overall) took No. 9 Notre Dame to the brink in the opener, a 12-10 Irish win. Rachel Ozer had three goals and two assists, while freshman Lucy Dikeou also a hat trick in her debut. Stanford hosts Harvard Sunday (Feb. 24).

CALIFORNIA (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) opens at George Washington Thursday (Feb. 21) and Maryland-Baltimore County Saturday (Feb. 23). The 2012 MPSF Semifinalists return the conference player of the year, Megan Takacs, from a 53-goal season.

UC DAVIS (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) opens the Kate Henwood era Friday at Florida and Sunday at Stetson. Elizabeth Datino (MPSF-High 101 points) and newcomer of the year Elizabeth Landry return, as does the majority of last year's roster.

OREGON (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) begins its season this weekend at home against Dartmouth and Cincinnati. The Ducks ran the MPSF table last year, capturing a first-ever conference title, and return 18 players from that team.

ST. MARY'S (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) opens its season with a pair of conference road games at San Diego State and USC this weekend. All-MPSF honorees Amanda Cross, Holly Hayes, and Rachel Minarovich return to the 2013 squad.

MARCY LEVATINO MPSF OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Fresno State sophomore midfield Marcy Levatino (Laguna Hills, CA) came off the bench to score seven goals in the season-opener vs. Presbyterian, breaking the single-game school record. Levatino not only dominated on attack, but on the draw as well, coming up with eight draw controls. She also picked up five groundballs and forced two caused turnovers. KATE HENRICH MPSF DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Denver senior defender Kate Henrich (Lansdale, PA) recorded five groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls in the 10-9 win at Vanderbilt. With those three caused turnovers, Henrich moved into a tie with All-American Ali Flury for second on Denver's all-time list with 103, just three away from the team record. ANGELICA FUCCILLO MPSF ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Fresno State freshman attacker Angelica Fuccillo (Eastport, NY) scored four goals, three of which came from a free-position where she was 100%. She moved well on the attacking third of the field and added two assists for the victory. In midfield transitions, Fuccillo helped re-defend and forced two caused turnovers for the `Dogs.
