Cardinal Wins Fourth Straight Stanford Invitational

STANFORD (8-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) freshman Anna Yelizarova posted a hat trick in the title game and five goals on the day, as the Cardinal defeated UC Davis (11-2) and then UCLA (8-5) for the Stanford Invitational Crown. Kiley Neushul recorded three goals vs. UCD, a game in which Stanford led 10-0 after three quarters. Yelizarova and Melissa Seidemann each poured in five goals in the 15-4 Saturday win over San Jose State. The Cardinal visits UC Davis Saturday (Feb. 9).

UCLA (11-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) won three of four to reach the Stanford Invitational finals this past weekend. The Bruins defeated Hawaii (12-7), Indiana (9-5), and California (7-4). Freshman Rachel Fattal accumulated 10 goals during the weekend, including three in the championship against top-ranked Stanford. UCLA hosts Cal Lutheran Saturday in the home opener.

CALIFORNIA (5-1 Overall/0-0 MPSF) recorded a third-place finish at Stanford with a 12-6 win over San Jose State. The Bears also had weekend wins over Hawaii (10-7) and Indiana (12-7). Tierra Schroeder totaled nine weekend goals, including five vs. the Rainbow Wahine and three vs. the Spartans. Cal heads to the Princeton Invitational this weekend, facing the host Tigers Friday (Feb. 8), followed by Harvard, George Washington, and Villanova Saturday (Feb. 9).

SAN JOSE STATE (6-3 Overall/0-0 MPSF) took fourth at the Stanford Invitational, posting wins over UC Davis (7-6) and Hartwick (13-4). The Spartans play a Canadian touring team Friday in an exhibition contest. Freshman Rae Lekness leads SJSU in scoring with 21 goals through nine games (2.33 GPG).

CSU BAKERSFIELD (1-6 Overall/0-0 MPSF) dropped a pair of games at the Cal Baptist tournament, 11-6 to No. 6 UC Irvine and 10-6 to No. 7 San Diego State. The Roadrunners compete at the UC San Diego Invitational this weekend, first facing UC Santa Barbara.

ARIZONA STATE (6-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) was off this past week, and meets Marist to open the UCSD Invite. The Sun Devils kicked off their season with six wins at the UCSB Invitational, taking out Cal Baptist (14-7), LMU (11-7), CS Northridge (12-6), UCSB (10-7), UC Irvine (5-4), and Concordia (15-5). MPSF Player of the Week Alicia Brightwell combined for 17 goals, six vs. CSUN, the second most in single-game Sun Devil history. Freshman goalkeeper E.B. Keeve was awarded MPSF Newcomer of the Week after combining for 66 saves (11.00 S/G), highlighted by 12 saves vs. No. 6 UCI.

USC (0-0 Overall/0-0 MPSF) opens its season this weekend at the UC San Diego Invitational, Feb. 9-10, first playing CSU East Bay Saturday at 8:30 am. The Trojans tied for second in the MPSF last year and finished second nationally.

TIERA SCHROEDER KAP 7 MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK

California sophomore Tiera Schroeder (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos HS) scored nine goals during the Stanford Invitational, including five in a victory over No. 11 Hawaii. She also notched three goals in a win over No. 8 San Jose State. Schroeder was a newcomer of the week last year on Jan. 23, but this is her first career player of the week honor. Stanford freshman Anna Yelizarova (LaSalle, PQ, Canada/Vanier College) scored 10 goals this past weekend as the Cardinal cruised to a fourth straight Stanford Invitational title. Yelizarova posted a pair of hat tricks and scored at least twice in all three games, highlighted by three goals in the 8-5 title game win over No. 3 UCLA and a five-goal effort in Saturday's 15-4 victory over No. 8 San Jose State.
