USC Wins Its Third MPSF Championship

USC (24-1 Overall/5-1 MPSF) Hannah Buckling scored four goals and Monica Vavic added three in an 11-7 MPSF Championship victory over top-seeded Stanford on Sunday in Berkeley. The Trojans raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, and were not caught. USC's third MPSF title results in an NCAA Automatic bid, May 10-12 at Harvard. As the top seed in the eight-team field, the Trojans' first game is with No. 8 seed Pomona. Vavic leads the MPSF in scoring average (2.84 GPG).
STANFORD (27-2 Overall/6-0 MPSF) took the runner-up spot at the MPSF Championships. The Cardinal won their semifinal game against UCLA, 11-7, behind Melissa Seidemann's four goals, who would also proceed for a title game hat trick. Receiving one of two NCAA At-Large bids, Stanford is seeded second, first meeting No. 7 seed Iona May 10.
UCLA (26-6 Overall/3-3 MPSF) captured the MPSF Bronze with a 10-7 outcome over No. 3 seed Arizona State on Sunday. The Bruins also defeated the host No. 5 seed California, 4-3 on day one, backed by four unanswered goals and a Rachel Fattal hat trick. UCLA is headed to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large, seeded third, facing No. 6 seed Princeton.
ARIZONA STATE (26-7 Overall/4-2 MPSF) placed fourth at the MPSF Tournament, its highest-ever finish at the event, picking up a win on the first day against San Jose State, 12-8. Alicia Brightwell poured in four goals and EB Keeve picked up 16 saves vs. the Spartans. Brightwell scored 84 goals in her final season, currently tied for 10th in MPSF single-season history. Furthermore, Keeve totaled 375 saves this year, outdone by only two goalkeepers in single-season MPSF history.
CALIFORNIA (17-7 Overall/2-4 MPSF) was this year's MPSF Tournament host, defeating San Jose State in the fifth-place game, 12-8. Emily Csikos completed her Cal career with 215 goals, tied for 19th to date in MPSF history. Seniors Dana Ochsner, Remington Price, and Breda Vosters each scored twice in their final game at Cal.
SAN JOSE STATE (12-12 Overall/1-5 MPSF) was sixth with a day two win over CSU Bakersfield, 14-7. Freshman Rae Lekness led the Spartans this year with 54 goals, ranking fourth in MPSF scoring average, followed by Timi Molnar with 52.
CSU BAKERSFIELD (12-24 Overall/0-6 MPSF) concluded its first season in the MPSF with conference tournament games against USC and San Jose State. The Roadrunners were led by Nicola Barrett's 48 goals in 2013.
