San Jose State Takes Down No. 25 Arizona State

SAN JOSE STATE accumulated 194.200 last Saturday in Tempe, AZ, to knock off No. 25 Arizona State (193.625) and MPSF rival Sacramento State (192.225). The Spartans last defeated a ranked opponent in February, 2009. Senior Bekah Gher won her first career all-around (38.850). Senior Julia Greer claimed a pair of titles on floor (9.85) and beam (9.825) for the second straight meet, while Kiana Gordon scored a team-high on her first collegiate vault (9.75).

SACRAMENTO STATE posted 192.225 in a tri-meet at No. 25 Arizona State against the host Sun Devils and San Jose State, as junior Kalliah McCartney finished first on vault (9.875), tied for first on beam (9.825), and placed second in the all-around (38.650). The Hornets rank 23rd in the nation on balance beam this week (48.550).

UC DAVIS Tiana Montell won two events to lead a 191.250-188.250 home-opening dual win over Alaska-Anchorage on Monday (Jan. 13). Montell displayed a career-high and winning floor (9.75) along with the top beam routine (9.725). Anna Shumaker posted a first-place vault (9.775), shared the title on bars with Yonni Michovska (9625), en route to a winning all-around (38.050).

SEATTLE PACIFIC won every event as it opened the season at home with a dual decision over Alaska-Anchorage, 190.750-188.200, the highest Falcon season-opening total in eight years. Maria Hundley led the charge with two titles, a 9.80 on vault and 9.70 on beam. Tracie Villanueva posted a winning 9.75 on bars, while Kai Tindall and Kristi Hayashida shared the floor title (9.775). Lauren Glover had a trio of top-three routines (vault-2nd, 9.625; beam-T-3rd, 9.575; floor-3rd, 9.725) in her collegiate debut.

ALASKA-ANCHORAGE M'rcy Matsunami took second on beam (9.650) and shared second on vault (9.625), en route to winning the all-around at Seattle Pacific (38.325) last Friday. Morgan Cook tied for third on beam (9.575). Monday at UC Davis, Cook and Kallie Randolph took second on floor (9.675), as did Simone Penker on beam (9.70).

AIR FORCE took second with a total of 190.625, behind host No. 14 Minnesota and ahead of Lindenwood in last Saturday's season-opening tri-meet. Three Falcons' recorded a fourth-place routine, led by Katie Hawthorne on bars (9.775), Shannen Kelly on beam (9.575), and Linnaea Hance all-around (37.550). Lindsay Ebel had top-six finishes on beam (5th, 9.50) and bars (6th, 9.625).
