UC Davis Hosts 13th Edition of MPSF Championship

UC DAVIS has won the last four MPSF Championships, and along with 2008, owns five total. The Aggie championship output last year of 194.950 was the second-highest in the history of the meet. On Feb. 28 this season, the Aggies became the first-ever MPSF team to hit 196, accumulating a conference record 196.425. On the same evening, Anna Shumaker produced a 9.925 floor routine, sharing the top MPSF score of the regular season over all events combined. Shumaker is a four-time 2014 MPSF Gymnast of the Week honoree, including the last three in succession. On Jan. 26, UCD totaled a 49.050 vault score, tied for first all-time, before breaking the all-time MPSF balance beam record on Feb. 21 with 49.175. The bars total of 49.225 on Feb. 28 was a conference season-high and third all-time.

SAN JOSE STATE competes in its first MPSF Championship since its initial stint in the conference from 2002-05. The Spartans won the title in 2004, recording a team total of 195.925. That score stood as No. 1 all-time in the MPSF for a decade, and ranks as the second-best heading in to the 2014 championship. The 2014 Spartans have accumulated four separate top-five team marks in MPSF history, including the vault lineup on Feb. 14 (48.950, 4th), bars on Feb. 28 (49.200, 4th), floor on Mar. 14 (49.350, 5th), and overall total on Mar. 14 (195.800, 5th). Julia Greer is coming off a 9.925 floor routine, sharing a 2014 MPSF-High, all events combined.

SACRAMENTO STATE partakes in its first MPSF Championship since its initial stint in the conference from 2002-05. The Hornets won team titles in their first two years in the MPSF in `02 and '03 (also the inaugural years of MPSF Women's Gymnastics), and followed up with a crown in their last appearance in '05. Kalliah McCartney owns seven vault titles this year, most recently behind a 9.85 at San Jose State Mar. 15. The Hornets have the top vault squad in the conference, owning an RQS of 48.915. They topped out at 49.025 on as their season-high on Mar. 1, a total which ranks third all-time in the MPSF.

AIR FORCE Jessica Wallander is the lone defending conference champion in this year's MPSF Championship. The Falcons improved their team total during all 11 regular season meets this year. They are coming off a season-high and best total since 2004 of 195.300 this past Monday against No. 20 Arizona, a score which also ranks 15th in MPSF history. Hance won the all-around on a career-high (39.175), and shared two other titles on bars and beam with career-highs of 9.875 on each at New Hampshire Mar. 14. Air Force totaled its second-best all-time beam score and third-best in MPSF history (49.125).

SEATTLE PACIFIC won MPSF titles in `06 and `07. SPU surpassed 190 in every meet during the regular season, a feat the program had never achieved in its first 40 years. The Falcons totaled 193.125 at Washington on Mar. 14, against the Huskies and No. 12 Oregon State. Lauren Glover is a two-time MPSF Newcomer of the Week in 2014, while Maria Hundley, Tracie Villanueva, and Kristi Hayashida have also been honored.

ALASKA-ANCHORAGE claimed its lone MPSF title in 2009. Morgan Cook posted a 38.125 all-around to lead the Seawolves to a 188.550 score in the Mar. 7 tri-meet at Sacramento State. Cook turned in a season-high 9.70 on vault, while the team matched its best night of the year on that event, totaling 47.850.
