MPSF Lacrosse Release 10
OREGON (10-5 Overall, 6-1 MPSF) won two on the road, 10-8 at USC and 13-6 at San Diego State to jump to second-place in the standings. The Ducks have two remaining at home, Friday against first-place Denver and Sunday against Colorado, where a win over each results in the MPSF Tournament's No. 1 seed. Oregon owns a two-way tiebreaker over USC if needed. Olivia Pyne was a collective five-for-six shooting on the trip. Bella Pyne also delivered five goals, including four at SDSU. She had a natural hat trick to begin the second-half.
# RV DENVER (15-1 Overall, 8-0 MPSF) extended its win streak to 13 and turned in a third-straight undefeated home season with an 18-6 rout of Old Dominion and 12-5 outcome over California. The Pioneers head to Oregon Friday, where a Pioneer win would mean the No. 1 seed in the following week's MPSF Tournament in which they host (May 1-4). Jill Remenapp, No. 2 in the NCAA for assists, totaled five more along with five goals for 10 points during the week. Her five assists brings her MPSF record total to 146 in her career. Sonorah Vineyard combined for seven caused turnovers and nine draw controls last week.
ST. MARY'S (2-11 Overall, 0-8 MPSF) Rachel Minarovich collected 10 draw controls last Tuesday at Presbyterian to bring her career total at the time to 215, a new MPSF record. She passed Jen May's (Oregon 2005-08) all-time mark of 209 on her fifth draw of the day. Minarovich went on for a collective six draws against Campbell and Kennesaw State, to reach 221 with one game left. Molly Kuptz combined for three goals, three assists, eight groundballs, five draw controls and four caused turnovers over the wins, while Jaclyn Biggers collected a 2014 MPSF-high tying 11 draws at Campbell.
USC (8-7 Overall, 6-3 MPSF) picked up its first-ever win over a ranked opponent this past Sunday, 11-10 over No. 13 Stanford. Trojan leading scorer Alex Moore scored three goals and had an assist in that win, and finished the weekend with four goals and two assists. Liz Shaeffer recorded four of her eight saves from free-position attempts, and caused a pair of turnovers to preserve the win. The Cardinal was held to 2-for-9 from 8-meter. USC has a pair of non-conference road games this week, at No 5 Northwestern in the first-ever lacrosse contest at Wrigley Field, followed by a visit to Marquette. The Trojans will then be seeded somewhere between three and five in the MPSF Tournament. They hold a two-way tiebreaker over Stanford if needed.
# 17 STANFORD (12-3 Overall, 6-2 MPSF) Kelsey Murray combined for six goals, three assists, and three ground balls as Stanford went 2-1 in MPSF games last week. Murray had three goals and an assist in a 15-10 victory over San Diego State, two goals and an assist in an 18-6 victory over UC Davis, and a goal and an assist at USC. Adrienne Anderson had four ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover at SDSU. Stanford hosts California Thursday, where a win would mean the two seed for the Cardinal, provided Oregon does not win twice this week. Stanford owns two-way tiebreakers over Colorado and Oregon if necessary.
CALIFORNIA (5-10 Overall, 3-5 MPSF) won two of three this past week, 11-7 at home over Fresno State and 7-6 at Colorado. Bella Huther and Amelia Burke had a hat trick each against Fresno State, while Lizz Lavie had two goals and three assists. Gaby Christman caused four turnovers in that win, along with two goals and three caused turnovers at Colorado. The Bears would qualify for the MPSF Tournament with a San Diego State home loss to Fresno State Wednesday, coupled with winning at Stanford Thursday.
UC DAVIS (7-8 Overall, 2-6 MPSF) Elizabeth Landry totaled seven goals, four assists, and five draws through the 1-1 split with Stanford and Fresno State. She has reached 108 career goals, ninth in Aggie history. Mary Doyle totaled five caused turnovers, six draw controls and four ground balls over the two games, including a game-high three steals, two grounders and a team-leading five draws in Saturday's 15-8 victory over Fresno State.
FRESNO STATE (2-11 Overall, 1-7 MPSF) Senior Kara Concheck and sophomore Anjelica Fuccillo led the Bulldogs with a team-high three goals each at California. Concheck also posted one assist to finish the day with four points, and went on for a hat trick at UC Davis. Fresno State concludes its season at San Diego State Wednesday and Michigan Saturday.
SAN DIEGO STATE (6-9 Overall, 3-5 MPSF) Christina Ricciardulli scored two goals and racked up seven draw controls against No. 13 Stanford. Felice Artuso recorded six draw controls and three groundballs to go along with two goals and an assist against Oregon. The Aztecs would receive the sixth and final MPSF Tournament ticket with a Wednesday home win over Fresno State. Without that win, they would need Stanford to defeat Cal Thursday. SDSU owns tiebreakers over Cal and UC Davis in the event of a three-way tie in the final standings, defeating each of the two this year.
COLORADO (9-7 Overall, 5-3 MPSF) won a non-conference game at home, 12-10 over Old Dominion, as Marie Moore collected a 2014 MPSF-High tying 11 draws and Paige Soenksen 12 saves. The Buffaloes close the regular season at Oregon Sunday (Apr. 27), where regardless of that outcome, can do no worse than earning the five seed for the conference tournament. If necessary, Colorado has a two-way tiebreaker over USC.
