BYU Repeats as MPSF Champion
April 26, 2014
MPSF Finals Box Score; BYU 3, Stanford 0
Provo, UT--MPSF Tournament MVP and two-time conference player of the year Taylor Sander delivered 15 kills (.324) and two aces as the Cougars defended their MPSF crown Saturday night at home, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) over No. 3 seed Stanford. BYU won all nine sets in the conference tournament, only the second time that has happened (Stanford, 1997), becoming the first MPSF team since BYU to repeat in '03 and '04. The outcome also marked the first time since 1997, and second-time ever, where both MPSF semifinals and the final resulted in straight-set wins.
The serve-receive battle was one of the biggest stories of the night, as it had been all tourney long. The Cougars continued to fire away, finishing with six aces to Stanford's one, while committing nine fewer errors. BYU also won the block, 8-4, led by Devin Young's four. Stanford's Grant Delgado had a match-high 11 digs, while all-tournament selection Brian Cook had a match-high 17 kills with a solid .483 hitting clip.
BYU receives one of the four NCAA Automatic bids, competing for a national championship April 29-May 3 at Loyola-Chicago. Stanford and Pepperdine figure to be strong candidates to receive at-large bids.
