OU Sets Rings Record; Modi Hits 90

No. 1 OKLAHOMA junior Kanji Oyama placed second all-around at Stanford (88.250), helping the Sooners to a 440.550 to defeat No. 2 Stanford, No. 6 California and No. 10 Nebraska. Oklahoma fought back on the final rotation with a winning 74.900 on floor to overcome Stanford. The Sooners won every team title, except for vault, while setting a program record on still rings with a 76.250 total. Oyama set career-highs on floor (15.650), rings (15.250) and parallel bars (14.900). His score on floor shared the event's individual title. Other top Sooner gymnasts were Mike Squires on rings (1st-16.100), Danny Berardini on high bar (1st-14.950), and Josh Yee on vault (T-1st-15.400).
No. 2/3 STANFORD registered a season-best team score of 437.550 to place second at home against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 6 California and No. 10 Nebraska. Stanford produced season-bests on floor (74.750), pommel horse (70.300), rings (74.050) and vault (74.700). The Cardinal's score on vault was a meet-high, while tying Oklahoma for the highest score on parallel bars (73.150). Sophomore Akash Modi earned individual titles in the all-around (season-high 90.150), parallel bars (15.450) and pommel horse (14.800). He placed second on high bar (14.650) and fourth on rings (15.050). Modi is the first gymnast in the country to break 90 all-around this year. Sean Senters remained undefeated on vault this year, tying for first with a season-best 15.400.
No. 6/7 CALIFORNIA junior Kevin Wolting finished fourth all-around (87.750), including a tie for the individual event win on floor (15.650), as the Bears took third at Stanford (423.500). Cal totaled 72.400 on vault, with Wolting earning a career-best and second-place 15.300. The Bears accumulated a season-best on floor (73.400), backed by Wolting's career effort and first-place tying 15.650. Kevin Tran finished second on horse with a career-best (14.550), to lead the best team score of the year on the event (69.100) and secure third-place in the meet.
No. 11 AIR FORCE fell 425.100-407.150 at Minnesota (Jan. 24), during the squad's first road competition of the season. Senior Josh Ramos claimed an event title on floor with a career-high (15.100), winning by nearly a half-point. Nick Gaudlip finished third (14.700). The Falcons placed three within the top-half of the field on the pommel horse and vault. Freshman Arinn Wade and sophomore Tim Wang tied for second on horse with matching marks of 14.400, Sophomore Aaron Nubine (14.400) and Wang (14.300) finished second and third, respectively, on the vault. Freshman Jonathon Fornoff scored a 14.500 to tie for third on parallel bars.
