Stanford Takes Down No. 12 Irish

NO. 15 STANFORD (2-0 Overall, 1-0 MPSF) picked up two home wins to start the season last week, winning an MPSF game over Fresno State, 22-7 (Feb. 18), followed by a 12-10 outcome over 12th-ranked Notre Dame (Feb. 20). Rachel Ozer put away four goals against the Irish, each in big moments. She put Stanford ahead for good, 4-3, to complete a rally from an early 2-0 deficit. Then, when Notre Dame cut the deficit to 7-6 early in the second half, Ozer scored on a free-position to spark a 5-1 run. Adrienne Anderson held Irish All-America and leading scorer Cortney Fortunato without a goal and to only one assist. Allie DaCar withstood 37 shots in the crease, collecting eight saves in her second collegiate start.
NO. 20 DENVER (2-1 Overall, 1-0 MPSF) traveled to Vanderbilt Monday (Feb. 23), where the 20th-ranked Pioneers earned a 13-9 win. Down 3-1 nine minutes into the contest, the Pioneers used a 7-1 run over approximately the next 27 minutes to take charge of the game. Kiki Boone nailed a hat trick, Jill Remenapp had two goals and two assists, and goalkeeper Hannah Hook picked up a 2015 MPSF-high six ground balls along with seven saves.
USC (1-2 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) took No. 5 Northwestern to overtime in its 2015 opener (Feb. 7), holding the Wildcats scoreless for 26:31 in the first half in which USC led 7-0. Caroline de Lyra tallied five points on four goals and one assist. Elizabeth Eddy had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Gussie Johns, in her collegiate debut, had a game-high five ground balls and stopped six shots. Michaela Michael had seven draw controls. The Trojans are receiving votes in this week's IWLCA Poll. They are next in action this week at Stony Brook (Feb. 20) and Marist (Feb. 22).
UC DAVIS (0-2 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) traveled to Lehigh Friday (Feb. 20) and Lafayette Sunday (Feb. 22) to open the season. Melissa Kellen poured in five goals against the Leopards, sharing a 2015 MPSF single-game high. Elizabeth Landry added three goals, two assists, and a conference season-high eight draw controls.
SAN DIEGO STATE (0-2 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) Alex Watson posted a hat trick with three first-half goals at Jacksonville (Feb. 22). Michaela Jarvis added two goals in that game, after dishing three assists against No. 4 Florida (Feb. 20) in the season opener on the road. She also totaled five ground balls on the road trip.
CALIFORNIA (0-1 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) hosted No. 12 Notre Dame (Feb. 22), to open the Brooke Eubanks era in Berkeley. Gaby Christman delivered a final line of three goals, three ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Bella Huther tossed out two assists.
FRESNO STATE (0-1 Overall, 0-1 MPSF) Caroline Dineen-Carlson put away a career-high three goals in the season opener at No. 19 Stanford (Feb. 18), also grabbing a pair of ground balls and causing a turnover. In her first collegiate game, Nicole Ortlieb was two-for-three on shots.
ST. MARY'S (0-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) The Jessica Mucci era begins with an MPSF Game at California this Wednesday (Feb. 25).
OREGON (2-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) scored the first seven goals to open its season at Presbyterian (Feb. 13), en route to an 18-1 rout. Hayley Milner collected three goals and Holy Johnson dished five assists. Oregon was dominant with a 34-5 shot advantage, as well as 16-5 on caused turnovers and 27-12 in ground balls. In the second game of the road swing at High Point (Feb. 15), Milner again delivered for the Ducks, putting away the game-winner with 4:11 to play. The strike answered High Point's 5-0 run which had leveled the contest at 8. The Ducks forced 17 turnovers to help move to 2-0 on the year.
COLORADO (1-1 Overall, 0-1 MPSF) earned its first win when hosting Marquette (Feb. 14). Johnna Fusco tallied four goals and two assists. Blair Sisk put away a hat trick and dished one assist. Two of her goals came over an 8-0 run. Paige Soenksen recorded 10 saves, allowed just five, and kept Marquette off the board in one span of 33:24. Fusco had three goals in the MPSF and season opener against No. 19 Denver. The Buffs are off until Presbyterian visits on March 2.
