2015 MPSF GYMNAST OF THE YEAR CAMI GUYER - SENIOR - SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State senior Cami Guyer (Fall City, WA) was a three-time MPSF Gymnast of the Week honoree this year. She recorded a career-high 39.350 all-around (Mar. 8), seventh-highest in school history, and at that time, tops in the MPSF since the 2004 conference championship. Her all-around, along with a career-high 9.90 vault, led to a 195.675 team score. The March 8 Spartan total is just three-tenths off the school record, and ninth-best in MPSF history. The vault team accumulated 49.075 that day, second-best in school history and fifth-best all-time in the MPSF. Guyer was also part of the beam team that scored 49.075, tying for second at San Jose State and sixth in the MPSF Almanac. On March 14, Her 9.90 floor routine led to a 49.350 event total, tying for third in program and conference history. Guyer is ranked No. 1 in the all-around in the MPSF, sixth in the West Region, and 38th nationally. Entering the MPSF Championship, she had scored 39-plus seven times, winning eight titles. Guyer is an All-MPSF honoree in all four events plus the all-around for the second-straight year, the third MPSF Gymnast to achieve that feat (Katie Yamamura-UCD, 2012-13; Jessa Liegl-AFA, 2004-05).She is the fourth Spartan to be named MPSF Gymnast of the Year (Julia Greer, 2014; Jennifer Greene, 2005; Shirla Choy, 2004).
2015 MPSF NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR LAUREN RICE - FRESHMAN - SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State true freshman Lauren Rice (Henderson, NV) made an immediate impact on the Hornet program. She competed as an all-arounder in 10 of the 11 regular season meets. She is an all-conference performer in three events (vault, uneven bars, floor exercise) plus the all-around. Rice completed the regular season with a regional qualifying score of 38.945 all-around, ranking fourth in the MPSF and 10th regionally. Rice scored 38.500 or better in eight regular season meets and surpassed the 39-point plateau three times, including the final two meets of the year. Against Utah State on March 15, Rice totaled 39.225 (third-best in the MPSF this year) and set career-highs on vault (9.850) and beam (9.825). Her other highs during the regular season were 9.850 on bars against UC Davis and 9.825 on floor at UCLA. Rice was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week three times (Jan. 13, Jan. 27, Mar. 10), matching a conference-high. This is the second-straight MPSF Newcomer of the Year award for the Hornets (Jesse Williams, 2014).
2015 MPSF ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR RANDY SOLORIO - 30TH YEAR - SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State Associate Head Coach Randy Solorio serves as the primary vault coach, while assisting the Hornet floor squad. He is completing his 30th year as an assistant and fourth as an associate head coach. The Sacramento State vault team averaged 48.555 this season with a high of 49.075 (T-5th in MPSF history). On floor, the Hornets lead the MPSF with a regional qualifying score of 48.910, along with a season-high 49.125. Solorio was also the 2014 MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year, and was previously honored as the 1990 and 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as the 1997 USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year. A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor while competing for UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio handles all aspects of coaching, including recruiting and conditioning.
2015 MPSF COACH OF THE YEAR KIM HUGHES - 34TH YEAR - SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State Head Coach Kim Hughes picks up MPSF Coach of the Year honors in his final season at the helm of the Hornets. Hughes was head coach for 34 years, and on staff for 38, and announced his retirement earlier this year. The team has won eight conference titles since 2000, including the 2014 MPSF crown. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001, followed by two MPSF championships (2002-03). After a second-place finish in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF title with a two-point victory in 2005. Moving to the Western Athletic Conference in 2006, the success carried on with titles in '06 and '07. Hughes was named West Region and WAC Coach of the Year after the first title. The 2008 Hornets reached the NCAA Regionals. Coaching his final team in 2015, Sacramento State was particularly known for its success on vault and floor, recording a 49.075 on the former (T-5th in MPSF history), and owning a national top-25 ranking at one point on the latter. The Hornets totaled six weekly awards this year, including a conference-high tying three newcomer awards for Lauren Rice, also the newcomer of the year. All told during Hughes' six seasons in the MPSF, the Hornets won a remarkable16 individual conference titles, along with the four team championships.
