CALIFORNIA (0-0 MPSF, 5-0 Overall) won its first three home games of the season last week, 16-2 over CSUN (Jan. 27), 12-6 over Long Beach State (Jan. 28), and 11-9 over UC Davis (Jan. 28). Dora Antal delivered a hat trick in each contest, topping out with five goals in the home opener for an 11-goal week. Anna Illes and Emily Loughlin each scored two goals in both Speedo Tournament games against the 49ers and Aggies, finishing with five apiece for the week. Emma Wright added four goals, three assists, and two field blocks for the week. The Bears compete in the Stanford Invitational this weekend (Feb. 4-5), where they will play four games.
ARIZONA STATE (0-0 MPSF, 3-0 Overall) won all three games as it hosted San Diego State (Jan. 28), Wagner (Jan. 29), and UCSB (Jan. 29) to kick-off the season in its own ASU Tournament. The Sun Devils defeated the Aztecs 13-4, the Seahawks 13-3, and the Gauchos, 8-4. Maud Koopman accumulated nine goals over the three wins, five vs. SDSU. She also had a three-assist and three-steal game vs. UCSB. ASU next competes at the UC San Diego Invitational, Feb. 11-12.
STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 3-0 Overall) cruised past Long Beach State in its home opener Sunday (Jan. 29), 19-5, a game in which the Card led 10-1 by halftime. Maggie Steffens led the way with six goals, second-most in a single-game in the MPSF this year. Jamie Neushul followed with four goals. Gabby Stone collected 11 saves. The Cardinal hosts the Stanford Invitational this weekend (Feb. 4-5), playing four games over the two days.
USC (0-0 MPSF, 7-0 Overall) easily swept a doubleheader at Cal Baptist (Jan. 28), 28-1 over Concordia and 22-4 over Whittier, as 15 Trojans' found the back of the cage through the day. Stephania Haralabidis combined for eight goals, five against Whittier. Ioanna Haralabidis and Maud Megens scored game-highs of four goals each vs. CUI. Brigitta Games totaled seven goals across the two wins, while Denise Mammolito added five. Amanda Longan collected 12 saves vs. CUI. The Trojans' home opener is against San Diego State Friday (Feb. 3).
CSU BAKERSFIELD (0-0 MPSF, 2-4 Overall) Ashley Paz recorded a hat trick in leading a 10-8 victory over Pomona-Pitzer last Saturday (Jan. 28) at Cal Baptist. Courtney Wahlstrom totaled 19 saves through two games, nine in the win and 10 in a 13-3 loss to UC Irvine in game two of the doubleheader. The Roadrunners host California in their next outing on Feb. 11, which is also the first MPSF contest of 2017.
SAN JOSE STATE (0-0 MPSF, 2-4 Overall) split two games at California's Speedo Tournament Saturday (Jan, 28)-- edged by Long Beach State 9-8 in sudden victory overtime, followed by an 11-4 win over CSUN. Carla Toha Vilanova accumulated six goals, four against the 49ers. Klaudia Paradi scored twice in each game. The Spartans will play four games in the Stanford Invitational this weekend (Feb. 4-5).
UCLA (0-0 MPSF, 6-0 Overall) is coming off a bye week, and visits Long Beach State on Friday (Feb. 3). The Bruins defeated Pacific 15-4, Indiana 20-5, Michigan 12-5, and UC San Diego 17-2 at the UCSB Invitational (Jan. 21-22). Maddie Musselman totaled 12 weekend goals, including five in the Bruins' final game against the Tritons. Rachel Fattal accumulated nine goals, including hat tricks against Pacific and Indiana.
