BOULDER -- Senior Johnna Fusco and junior Carly Cox each recorded four goals as the Colorado women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 on Sunday afternoon with an 18-5 win over UC Davis at Kittredge Field.
WHAT HAPPENED: The No. 13 Buffs (4-0, 1-0 MPSF) opened their 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule with a powerful win against the Aggies (1-2, 0-2 MPSF).
Cox had a big day for the Buffs with a career-high four goals and an additional two assists for six points. She was 2-2 on free-position shots and had one caused turnover and one ground ball. Fusco recorded five points for CU, adding an assist with her four goals. She was 2-7 on free-position shots, had two ground balls and one caused turnover. Fusco also registered six draw controls.
The Buffs got on the board first and never looked back. Fusco recorded the first goal of the day with 21:51 remaining in the first half. Senior Cali Castagnola scored her only goal of the day three minutes later (18:51) and 10 seconds after that (18:41), Cox had her first goal of the day.
UCD recorded its first goal at 13:17 with Mellissa Kellan's 11th goal of the season off an assist by Shannon Cross, cutting CU's lead to a pair. A short time later the Buffs had increased the lead to 5-1, but the Aggies finished the half with a pair of goals, again getting within two goals.
After intermission, CU wasted no time. Junior defender Kelsie Garrison tallied her third goal of the season at 28:24, which was the first of nine straight goals scored by the Buffs, putting them ahead 15-3 with 13:52 remaining in the game. The Aggies scored two of the next three goals, bringing the score to 16-5, but the Buffs finished the game with another two goals.
In total, seven Buffs scored goals and five Buffs had assists for a total of 26 points on the day. Junior Darby Kiernan and senior Katie Macleay both scored three goals, while sophomore Samantha Nemirov had two.
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado had the huge edge in draw controls at 20-5 and also outshot the Aggies 44-12. The Buffs were a perfect 11-11 on clear attempts. UCD committed 50 fouls in the game, which included two yellow cards, while CU had just 15 fouls and one yellow card.

FRESNO, Calif. - The Oregon lacrosse team used eight second-half goals, including four unanswered in the final 12 minutes, to pull away and beat Fresno State, 12-9, on Sunday afternoon and remain unbeaten in MPSF play.
The Ducks (4-1, 3-0 MPSF) kicked off a stretch of eight road games in a row with a win and remained unbeaten as a program against the Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1 MPSF), moving to 10-0 in the all-time series.
How it Happened: Trailing 5-3 with time winding down the first half, the Ducks pulled within one at the break on a goal by sophomore Shannon Williams, giving her a hat trick in the first half alone to pace Oregon through the first period.
Senior Bella Pyne tied the game with quickly in the second period with her first goal of the game at the 28:03 mark, and sophomore Julia Taylor pulled the Ducks ahead, 6-5, with 24:33 remaining off an assist by freshman Julia Bolte.
After a Fresno State goal tied the game, Bolte took a dish from junior JoJo Hesketh and turned it into her third goal of the year to give Oregon back the lead. Hesketh followed less than two minutes later with a goal of her own on an assist from Williams. With the Ducks up two, 8-6, with less than 18 minutes to play, the Bulldogs ripped off three-straight goals to take a one-point lead with 12:53 remaining.
With Fresno State riding the momentum, junior Mariah Gatti quickly turned the tables back into Oregon's favor with her second goal of the game at the 11:55 mark to tie the game again, taking a feed from Pyne for the score. The Ducks then buckled down on defense and scored three more goals to seal the win, with Williams, Hesketh and Pyne each finding the back of the net again.
Who Stood Out: Williams tied her career-high of four goals for the third time this season while leading all players with five points, and Hesketh finished with a career-high four points on two goals and two assists. Gatti and Pyne each scored twice to give Oregon four players with multiple goals, and Taylor and Bolte each scored once.
Defensively, the Ducks were able to force 16 Fresno State turnovers, with Hesketh, Pyne and Jill Zubillaga each adding three, and senior goalie Becca Katzen (4-1) made four saves to earn another win. The Ducks won the draw-control battle, 15-8, behind a team-best four from Hesketh.
What it Means: At 3-0 in MPSF play, the Ducks are already within one win of their 2016 conference total (4-5) under new head coach Katrina Down. Oregon is 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2014.

DELAND, Fla. -- The No. 3-ranked USC lacrosse team (3-1) put up an 18-3 win over Stetson (0-3) at the Athletic Training Center on Sunday, Feb. 26. Eight Women of Troy scored goals including four with hat tricks. Freshman midfielder Kerrigan Miller led all scorers with a career-high five points (4g, 1a) as she picked up her second-career hat trick. Miller also had a draw control and a ground ball. Senior attacker Michaela Michael also had five points (3g, 2a) for her 28th-career hat trick. Michael led the way in the center circle with seven draw controls. Senior attacker Gabby McMahon scored her second-career hat trick and finished with three goals and an assist for four points. Junior attacker Alexis Kardias scored her first-career hat trick and finished with three goals on the day. Freshman midfielder Kaeli Huff scored a pair of goals and freshman attacker Ashley Hill had a goal and an assist--the first each of her career. Sophomore attacker Gabbi Klein dished out two of USC's seven assists and scored a goal for three points and sophomore midfielder Allie Gershman scored a goal. Gershman was also a defensive presence with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior defender Nina Kelty had one of each. In goal, junior Gussie Johns got the win. She allowed one goal and had four saves in the first half. Freshman Hannah Upshaw took the cage in the second half and surrendered two goals and had two saves with two ground balls. USC out-shot Stetson, 27-11 and put 22 of those shots on goal. USC also won the center circle by a 13-9 edge and had a perfect 13-for-13 day on clear attempts. For the Hatters, Maddie Holvey, Sandra Stephan, and Shelby Lehmann scored goals. Stephan and Lindsay Summers each had an assist. In goal, Liza Diamond put up four saves but allowed the 18 goals. Diamond led all players with six ground balls. Stephan led the Hatters with five draw controls. It took USC 14 minutes to build a 10-point lead in the first half. Michael scored back-to-back goals and then Huff did the same before five minutes had gone off the clock. McMahon, Michael, and Miller scored the next three unassisted before Michael found Kardias for the goal and an 8-0 lead. McMahon fed Klein for a goal and then Miller scored at the 16:03 mark for USC's 10-0 lead. Holvey scored for the Hatters on the next possession, but McMahon, Miller, and Kardias scored the final three of the half to give the Trojans a 13-1 lead. Kardias notched her hat trick to open the second half and put USC up, 14-1. Stephan stopped the 4-0 Trojan run when she scored at 23:20, but USC scored three more in a row as Miller, McMahon, and Gershman rung the bell for the Women of Troy. Lehmann put up Stetson's third goal at 7:46 left in the game, and Hill got on the board after taking a pass from Klein to make the final score 18-3. Up next, the Women of Troy have a bye week before they host Boston University and (March 8) and New Hampshire (March 13) at McAlister Field. Following the two home games, USC will return to the East Coast for back-to-back weekends.
St. Mary's 16, BUTLER 11

INDIANAPOLIS -- On Sunday morning, the Saint Mary's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-2 MPSF) showcased an impressive performance en route a 16-11 win at Butler for the team's first victory of the 2017 season. The win marks the first victory since the 2013-14 season when the Gaels collected two wins on the season. Today's result is also the first career win for Head Coach Alicia Florin. Attacker Jocelyn Lubert continued her hot streak for the Gaels, scoring a game-high seven goals. The 5-7 junior now has a team-leading 13 goals on the season. Fellow attacker Emily Mack recorded her first four goals of the season today, as she took eight shots and collected a ground-ball. Midfielders Jillian Dunlap and Hanna Dalrymple each contributed with two goals on the day. Dunlap, who is in her first year with the Gaels, led the team with a pair of assists to go with her two scores. The Gaels jumped out of the gate with the 1-0 advantage after a score by Dalrymple off a feed from Mack. Mack would then score back-to-back in less than a minute for the 3-1 advantage. After a 3-0 run by the Bulldogs propelled them to the 4-3 lead, SMC answered right back with three of their own. Lubert scored a brace during the run, while Dunlap gave SMC the 6-4 edge with eight minutes remaining. All tied, 6-6, the Gaels closed the opening half with two straight for the 8-6 advantage in the first 30 minutes. The second half was the Lubert show, as the junior scored five goals in the period. Her five goals equaled the total goals in the period for the Bulldogs. Holding a narrow 11-10 lead, Lubert scored five straight in the last 14:51 to seal the deal for the Gaels. First year keeper Cassidy Hoffman also picked up her first career win, as the freshman collected 12 saves. The Gaels held a 25-15 advantage in ground-balls and were a successful 16-for-22 on clear attempts. SMC will have a week off before heading back to the east coast. PONTIAC, Mich. -- The San Diego State lacrosse team won its second straight game Sunday with an impressive 18-7 victory over Detroit Mercy in a non-conference matchup at Ultimate Soccer Arenas. The Aztecs featured a balanced offense, receiving goals from 11 different players to even their record at 2-2 on the season, while the Titans slip to 1-2 overall. Seniors Vickie Porter and Alex Watson led the SDSU charge with three goals apiece, while fellow classmate Erin Jeffery finished with two tallies of her own, along with sophomore Natalie Peel and freshman Taylor Sullivan. The Aztecs also received a sizable contribution from another newcomer Ryli Quinn, who led all players with five draw controls, while senior Kristen Hickey (one goal, two assists) tied for game-high honors with four ground balls, along with senior goalkeeper Katrina Reeves and junior Mackenzie Lech. In addition, SDSU benefited from the strong play of senior Casey Taggert, who posted a career-best with four turnovers to go with two ground balls. The Aztecs never trailed in the contest, taking the lead for good at 2-1 on Peel's first goal of the day, a free position shot with 20:26 left in the first half. Nearly four minutes later, SDSU extended the margin to 3-1 after Porter hit pay dirt for the first time on the afternoon. UDM twice narrowed the gap to one over the next eight-and-a-half minutes, including a 5-4 spread following Kaitlyn Wandelt's free position score with 8:09 left in the period. However, the Aztecs methodically took control at this juncture, notching four of the next five goals in the game, including a strike by Peel with just six seconds left, to build a 9-5 lead heading into intermission. SDSU kept things rolling in the second half, including a quick goal by senior Kayla Deitz with just 1:27 elapsed on the clock. The Titans were unable to cut the deficit to under four for the remainder of the contest as Kelsi Pritchard's goal with 21:09 remaining proved to be the host schools final tally of the day. With an 11-7 lead in their pockets, the Aztecs uncorked a 7-0 run to end the game, capped by sophomore Grace McGinty's score at the final horn, which gave the Scarlet and Black its highest goal total since a 20-14 triumph over California on March 15, 2015. The SDSU blitz was also sparked by the aforementioned two-goal efforts of Sullivan and Jeffery, while Reeves made four saves in front of the net during that stretch to finish with nine for the game. On the flip side, Pritchard and Wandelt paced UDM with three goals each, while goalkeeper Alllison McDonough kept busy with 15 saves. As a team, the Aztecs dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Titans 40-23, while maintaining a 34-18 advantage in ground balls, including 20-7 spread in the second half, and a 16-10 margin in both draw controls and caused turnovers. In addition, SDSU was 3-for-5 on free position attempts, while UDM was 2-7, including an 0-4 effort in the second half. San Diego State will open up a season-long seven-game homestand on Sunday, March 5, when it tangles with Boston University at Aztec Lacrosse Field, beginning at noon PT. OHIO STATE 14, California 8

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite a first-career hat trick by Kate Mattimore, a personal-best three assists by Meredith Haggerty and a hat trick by Jena Fritts, the California women's lacrosse team lost to Ohio State, 14-8, Sunday afternoon in Columbus. The Golden Bears fell to 1-3 on the season.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game before Mattimore netted her first goal of the day. Haggerty assisted on Mattimore's first two goals and later assisted on a tally by Fritts, who boasted her own hat trick after totaling a career-best six goals at Butler on Friday, giving her nine goals for the weekend.
Mattimore's second goal made it 6-3, Ohio State, with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Mattimore completed her hat trick by scoring the first goal of the second half, make it 7-4, Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored the next three straight goals to take control of the contest. Cal battled Ohio State tough the whole game, cutting the deficit down to four with 12 and a half minutes left in the second half.
In goal, Jenny Wilkens posted another double-digit save performance with a season-best of 14 on the day, which marked the eighth time in her career and second time this season that she's made at least 10 stops. She also paced her team with 4 ground balls.
Freshman Noelani Murayama collected a goal and an assist. It was her second goal this season, and both of her goals have come on free-position shots.
Caroline Schlegel caused three turnovers while Alexandra Robertson caused two, and Sara Nolte secured three draws.
The Bears return to Berkeley next week for a five-game homestand, which begins with a battle against Michigan on Friday, March 3, at 5 p.m. from Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium.
