BYU freshman Gwen Gustafson (Brookfield, WI) swam the 50 free in 23.59 for second-place and the 100 free in 51.58 to win the event in helping the Cougars defeat Gardner-Webb and Old Dominion at the Liberty Invitational (Oct. 26-27). She added a fourth-place swim in the 100 fly (57.30), and was on the second-place 200 free relay (1:35.81) and 400 free relay (3:29.28) teams. This is Gustafson’s first career MPSF honor.

MPSF/TYR MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK


BYU senior Kunmi Ogunfeibo (Addington Village, United Kingdom) earned a victory in the 100 back (49.55) and was second in the 200 back (1:51.79) in helping the Cougars defeat Old Dominion, Mount St. Mary’s, and Gardner Webb at the Liberty Invitational (Oct. 26-27). He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:31.61) and 400 medley relay (3:23.20; 49.64 back leg) teams, and placed fifth in the 200 free (1:44.49). This is Ogunfeibo’s first career MPSF weekly award. Others Nominated: Lucca Martins (UCSB); Graham Hauss (UCSD)….
 
MPSF CLOSES OCTOBER WITH STRONG RESULTS
 
UCSB men (147-110) and women (154-103) collected dual wins over rival Cal Poly (Oct. 27). Logan Hotchkiss (1650 free-15:54.71; 500 free--4:31.06), Mason Tittle (50 free--20.20; 100 fly--48.59), Lucca Martens (200 fly--1:49.32; 200 IM--1:54.14), and Alec Cullen (100 breast--56.78; 200 breast--2:04.37) were each individual double-event winners for the men….Elena England swept the women’s backstroke events (57.35 and 2:03.90). Rachel Forbes won both distance events (16:59.99 in the 1650 and 5:02.20 in the 500). Heaven Quintana won all three of her swims, clocking at 1:04.70 in the 100 breast, 55.49 in the 100 fly, and 2:05.98 in the 200 IM.
 
BYU men defeated Old Dominion, 245-107, Mount Saint Mary’s, 293.5-49.5, and Gardner-Webb, 271-75 at the Liberty Invitational. Tama Tuitama was a triple-winner individually in the 200 back (1:51.66), 200 IM (1:51.47), and 400 IM (4:02.28). Kunmi Ogunfeibo won the 100 back (49.55).…The BYU women defeated Old Dominion, 236.5- 113.5, and Gardner-Webb, 248-96. Kennedy Cribbs placed first on the 1-meter (268.40), earning her first NCAA zone cut. Gwen Gustafson swam the 50 free in 23.59 to place second and won the 100 free in 51.58.
 
SAN DIEGO won a double-dual in the WCC Cup over LMU and Pepperdine. The Toreros won 10 of 16 events. Sam Terranova’s 500 free victory at 5:06.26 beat her time at the MPSF Championship last year. Alex Hubel had wins in the 200 medley relay (1:49.12), 200 free relay (1:39.48), 400 free relay (3:35.44), and 100 fly (56.86), while Abigail Russell was also on the winning 200 medley and had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:13.34) and 200 breast (2:26.62).
 
UC SAN DIEGO Tina Reuter recorded D-II ‘B’ cuts with winning marks in the 500 free (5:04.64), and 200 free (1:52.05) in the women’s dual win over Claremont. Brooke Abrantes posted two NCAA Zone qualifying scores, 267.15 on the one-meter and 281.85 on three-meter... Hayden Johnson and Tyler James each picked up two individual wins for the men to lead a dual result over the Stags. Johnson won the 1000 free (9:34.72) and 500 free (4:40.71), while James’ times of 50.78 in the 100 back and 46.70 in the 100 free both earned first-place.
 
UC DAVIS Mia Motekaitis won the 500 free (5:00.48) and was second in the 1000 free (10:21.61) and Taylor Hornberger punched an NCAA Zone ticket with the third-best one-meter diving score in school history (286.57) in a dual vs. Nevada (Oct. 26).
 
CAL POLY Amelia Feick was a double winner for the women at UCSB, taking the 200 breast (2:18.32) and 200 IM (2:07.28—over 3 seconds ahead of 2nd-Place), while Emily Imfeld finished first in the 100 free (52.41). Paul Rogers won the 200 free (1:40.16), while Gennady Sytnik and   Mihail Amirokov won the 200 back (1:51.61) and 200 IM (1:54.57), respectively.
