PHOEBE HINES OF HAWAII MPSF/TYR FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hawaii junior Phoebe Hines (Parrearra, Queensland, Australia) won five individual events over two meets this past week. She won the 1000 free (10:08.41), 500 free (4:52.01), and 200 free (1:50.85) vs. Wisconsin (Jan. 4), and followed up with victories in the 500 free and 200 free in a UH win over Simon Fraser (Jan. 6). The first repeat winner of the season on the women’s side, this is the second career MPSF weekly award for Hines. Others Nominated: Brook Abrantes (UCSD)…
SPENCER DAILY OF UC SAN DIEGO MPSF/TYR MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
UC San Diego freshman Spencer Daily (Danville, CA) won all three of his individual events in two different meets last week against Division-I competition. On Jan. 3, he won the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly against Incarnate Word and Wyoming, On Jan. 5, he repeated each of those wins with times of 20.58, a career-best 45.91, and a 48.58 vs. CSU Bakersfield. He also swam the fastest splits for two winning relays, the 200 free relay (19.72) and 400 free relay (45.12). This is the first MPSF Swimming & Diving honor of any kind for the Tritons. D-II TRITONS SWEEP D-I OPPONENTS
UC SAN DIEGO on Jan. 5, the top-ranked Division-II men defeated CSU Bakersfield (169-131), while the No. 2 women came out on top against CSU East Bay 150-114, CSUB 171-126, and LMU 154-106…UCSD swept D-I opponents on Jan. 3, as the women defeated Wyoming, 150-143, Incarnate Word, 143-97, and San Jose State, 155-143…The men captured a 157.5-130.5 victory over Wyoming and a 152-129 win over Incarnate Word…Women’s diver Brook Abrantes claimed wins on both the one and three-meter boards in the Jan. 5 meet… On Jan. 3, Spencer Daily won the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly. HAWAII Phoebe Hines collected three first-place finishes for the Rainbow Wahine in a home dual with Wisconsin (Jan. 4)…Hines, the current holder of the best time in the NCAA in the 1650 free (15:41.35), claimed victories in the 1000 free (10:08.41), 500 free (4:52.01), and 200 free (1:50.85)… She also won a pair of events against Simon Fraser (Jan. 6), again taking the 200 free and 500 free, leading UH to a 170-90 dual victory on Maui… Metin Aydin led the Warriors with two first-place finishes vs. UW, the 400 IM (3:57.57) and 100 back (49.09)… Lucas Cooperman came out on top of the men’s platform dive in the Wally Nakamoto Diving Invite, with an NCAA Zone Qualifying score of 316.40.
SAN DIEGO Kailyn Evans led the Toreros with two top-10 results, finishing second in the 50 breast (30.94) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:14.16), as USD defeated Dixie State and fell to Nevada and San Jose State (Jan. 5)... The Toreros excelled in the 1000 free, claiming half of the top-10 spots…Liza Kuznetsova led the way in 10:44.22 to place second…Jan. 7 at UCLA, The quartet of Alexa Phillips, Alex Hubel, Kailyn Evans and Dani Taylor finished third in the 400 free relay in 3:32.91.
