2019 MPSF Coach of the Year
DAVID HUNT · SECOND YEAR · HEAD COACH · PEPPERDINE
Pepperdine University Head Coach
David Hunt guided the 2019 Waves to their fifth MPSF Championship, and first since 2008, after being picked to finish third in the conference. The Waves are also making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in over a decade, and an MPSF-high and nationally fifth-best .786 win percentage (22-6). Pepperdine won the MPSF’s regular season outright with nine wins. Sixteen of the Waves’ 22 overall wins have come against teams currently ranked in the Top-15 RPI poll, along with nine wins against the top-10. The Waves were one of just three teams in the country ranked in the top-six in each AVCA poll this year. Further, Pepperdine is one of five teams in the nation to have an undefeated home record, while carrying a seven-match and 17-set win streak into the NCAA Tournament.
Through their MPSF Championship, the Waves rank No. 1 in the conference in team hitting percentage (.346, NCAA No. 3), as well as at the top of the MPSF in kills (NCAA No. 3), assists (NCAA No. 2), and digs per set, and No. 2 in aces per set. In addition to being the only team ranked in the MPSF’s top-three in every statistical category, in the individual stats Kevin Vaz leads the conference in blocks per set, as does Robert Mullahey in assists. Pepperdine placed four starters on the all-conference teams, including two on the first team, in addition to three on the all-tournament team. David Wieczorek became the fourth player in MPSF history to go back-to-back as MPSF Player of the Year. The Waves are 37-14 (.725) in just under two full years with Hunt as head coach. Pepperdine now has four MPSF Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year awards (Hunt-2019; Marv Dunphy-2007, 2005, 2002).
