California junior Nikolaos Papanikolaou (Athens, Greece/49th HS of Athens) filled up the stat sheet in a pair of wins last week, First, in a 22-7 victory over No. 20 Santa Clara (Nov. 10), Papanikolaou tallied four goals, two assists and a steal. Then in the 16-9 win over No. 3 UCLA (Nov. 13) to help give Cal the MPSF Tournament’s No. 1 seed, he had two goals, two assists, one steal, one field block and six drawn exclusions. In the two games, he totaled six goals, four assists, two steals, one field block and seven drawn exclusions. This is Papanikolaou’s fifth career MPSF weekly honor, including a conference-
high of three player of the week awards this year.

California freshman Roberto Valera (Martorell, Spain/IES Car Sant Cugat) totaled six goals, three assists and two field blocks across wins over No. 20 Santa Clara (Nov. 10) and No. 3 UCLA (Nov. 13). Valera scored a game-high four goals against the Bruins, which helped the Bears clinch the MPSF Tournament’s No. 1 seed. He put away the first two goals to break a 5-5 tie, giving Cal the lead for good. Valera earned an MPSF Men’s Water Polo record five weekly newcomer awards this year.
