Loos, Guimaraes Excel at Winter Cup, Seal Spots on US National Team

Stanford sophomore Riley Loos (El Dorado Hills, CA) finished second in the all-around competition on day one of the 2021 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup to earn an automatic spot on the United States Senior National Team. Loos finished with an overall score and career-high 83.250, as he captured the event title on floor (14.250) and vault (14.750), and finished top-eight on all six events. His other results included fourth-place on still rings (14.000), fifth-place and career-high on parallel bars (13.750), and seventh-place on high bar (13.350) and pommel horse (13.150). This is the third career MPSF weekly award for Loos, all consecutively these past three weeks.

No. 1 OKLAHOMA Vitaliy Guimaraes claimed two top-10 finishes at the Winter Cup, placing fifth on high bar with a 26.700 two-day total and eighth on parallel bars (25.900) to punch a ticket onto the US Senior National Team…Matt Wenske placed sixth on parallel bars after a two-day 26.750 tally and tied for seventh on still rings (27.450). 

No. 10 CALIFORNIA held off No. 11 William & Mary in a virtual dual meet, 382.950-379.750 (Feb. 24)…Cal produced a season-high on floor (66.400), behind five personal-bests, led by Kyle Abe’s 13.750…Abe finished with an all-around of 74.800…Yu-Chen Lee recorded a career-high on vault (14.050) and parallel bars (13.550)…Caleb Rickard had a personal-best 13.250 on floor, helping Cal to its season-high in the event...Rickard paced the Bears’ high bar squad with his season-high 13.100.

No. 13 AIR FORCE Garrett Braunton competed at the Winter Cup (Feb. 26), contested in Indianapolis this year, where he recorded a top-10 finish on high bar (13.050) and top-20 all-around (71.500).
