2022 MPSF WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE MEET

Adaobi Tabugbo (Laurel, MD) becomes the first indoor track & field freshman in over a decade to earn the MPSF’s top end-of-the-season major award (Lawi Lalang-Arizona Men, 2011). Tabugbo was a 2022 double-event conference champion in the 60-meter dash (7.71) and 60-meter hurdles (8.51) on the final day of the meet. She also placed sixth in the 200-meter with a career-best 24.92, to contribute a total of 23 points toward BYU’s first-ever MPSF Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship. Prior to winning her titles, Tabugbo sprinted to an 8.39 in the 60-hurdles prelim, setting a personal-best and achieving the top season time in the MPSF.

Charlie Vernoy (Ventura, CA) was the 2022 MPSF Weight Throw Champion with a facility record at The Podium, delivering a lifetime-record heave of 21.89 meters (71’-10”). Vernoy’s mark easily won the competition by over seven feet, and ranks 13th in the nation and second in school history. He also finished in second-place in the shot put with a season-best throw of 16.60 meters (54’-5.50”), giving him 18 individual points (second-most on the men’s side) towards a runner-up overall team finish. Vernoy is a prior Big West Champion and NCAA Regional Qualifier in the discus event during the outdoor season.

Ed Eyestone led the Cougar men to their third-straight MPSF Championship. BYU won over half of the MPSF Titles (nine of 17), including the DMR , the 4 x 400 relay, Zach McWhorter’s conference record-tying pole vault, Danny Bryant’s shot put, Dallin Draper’s 60 and 200, Joey Nokes’ 3000, Zach Erikson’s 5000, and Dallin Vorkink’s heptathlon. The BYU women also won nine of the 17 events for their first MPSF Championship. Adaobi Tabugbo was a double-event champion in the 60-meter and 60-hurdles. Her titles were joined by Meghan Hunter’s 800, Taye Raymond’s long jump, Cailee Faulkner’s pole vault, Jessica Thomspon’s shot put, Sable Lohmeier’s weight throw, Halley Folsom’s pentathlon, and the 4 x 400 relay. This is Eyestone’s third and fourth career MPSF Coaching award, previously earning the men’s recognition in 2019 and 2020.
